Let me start off by saying that this is NOT for CCW/EDC/Duty/etc. This is for a general range holster that will see informal competition use as well.
(I know damn well that I'm going to be dropping some serious $$ on good, quality leather for actual carry.)

That being said, anyone know of any good sources for some less-expensive leather? I know the usual cost-cutting route is Kydex, but I would really like leather if I can find it. I'm looking for a typical OWB belt holster, butt-forward/FBI cant, for a P226 (old-school, no rail). Around the $40 range preferably.

That's a pretty low figure!

How about $60 for a K&D?

I have a belt from them, and it's really nice, solid/rigid and quite attractive.

ETA: A Yaqui-style might be closer to your ballpark, if that would do you.

How about a Rafter S the plain cowhide is just $50.  They make some of the holsters that Wilson sells.  I really like mine for a commander.

What's the consensus on Don Hume leather? Been looking around now and found a variety of Don Hume holsters in the $40-$50 range.

I have 2 they are a paddle holster that is outstanding and a so so pancake style.  The pancake was $45 and the other is so old I don't remember what I gave for it.  Like I stated before I like the Rafter better for me.

For the money you listed Don Hume would probably be the best bet.  I have two of their holsters and they impressed me for the money.

I have a couple Don Hume's, and I think they are a great value.  nice holsters.  I also have some mid-range holsters (ie ~$100) and the DH are, imo, almost as good.
