Alrighty,
I have several handguns with rails, and tomorrow I'm picking up a SA Operator.  That's the straw that broke the back, I've decided I need a light for HD etc.  What would you all recommend as an excellent light for my G19, XD, Operator?  Incandescent or LED?  Surefire or Streamlight?  I really know "jack" about weapon lights, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

hi rich how's it going. i'm also looking into a nice light for my XD40.  i read a nice review about the TLR-1 (http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=23&t=30992), which is an LED...  i dont' know all the pros/cons of each, but LEDs seem to be preferred.  quite a few other threads about this, might wanna read down through them. in the end it seems like preference always makes the final decision. key things to look for tho:  durability, ease of operation (switch placement/action), brightness of emission (also condensed beam vs. a more "floodlight" wide beam), price, weight...  obviously the priority of these features will vary from person to person.  also maybe you want a laser with the light, maybe you don't.

i'm 21 yrs old, starting grad school in a few weeks so i'm tight on cash, but getting a light is something i really want to do.  because of my limited funds, i'm considering maybe getting only a small led flashlight (not mounted) to keep with my pistol, but i could also use otherwise without taking the xd40 with it... which of course has its drawbacks, but probably would work okay too? maybe a mounted light is way better tho, i dunno, something i just started thinking about?

anyways, yeah i'm a little chatty tonight, but hopefully u got some helpful information out of that haha. but yeah look around at some of the other threads and see what others have to say, as well! (i'm pretty much a newbie with lights, and firearms in general).

g'luck.

for the money, the streamlight offers the best bang for the buck and quality

h/w, lots of folks swear by the surefires (200, etc)

i use the old streamlight M3s and it works fine; from what i have been hearing and seeing in the reviews, the Streamlight TLR-1 is going to be my next choice

i love LEDs; i prefer my Inova X03 over my surefire G2--those halogens get hot as hell fast!

I picked up a  Streamlight TLR-1 at a gunshow on friday. For the 99$ I payed it's awesome. Well built, good battery life, and bright as hell. I'd recommend it.
