I carry a 1911 that is a tad finicky and reliably feeds hardballs and golden sabers to date.  I'm told the Sabers aren't that good of a defensive round.  Also, the 1911 doesn't do well w/Hydra-shoks either.  Are there any other defensive loads i.e., Gold Dots or Ranger T-series that you think would feed equally as well?  To be honest, I don't have the money to be buying a bunch of different rounds to experiment with,  so I thought I'd go with the best educated guess I could get from this forum and then try those at the range.

Get the GS Bonded for about 34.45 per 50 round box, they perform better than the regular stuff. At least you know they will function in your gun.

My only experience is with 230gr+p gold dots. My 1911 likes them.

My Colt Rail Gun eats Federal HST 230gr +P like candy.  However, it throws brass into the next county and puts a nice gouge in it to boot, so I'm going to try a heavier recoil spring to try and tame the ejection a bit.  Hopefully this won't affect the feed.

You need to properly adjust your extractor, it's probably to tight

Correct, Golden Sabers have terrible core jacket separation issues, and the core on it's own does not expand well.

Also, the 1911 doesn't do well w/Hydra-shoks either.
Lots of things don't do well with Hydra-shoks, terrible feed profile, and they don't expand after heavy clothing anyway.  Old bullet design, modern marketing

Are there any other defensive loads i.e., Gold Dots or Ranger T-series that you think would feed equally as well?
Yes.  The 230 Gold dot has a very good feed profile.

Remington recently released a bonded version of the Golden Saber that should take care of the core-jacket problem, and perform just as well as a Gold Dot or Win Ranger-B series.
However, it is very hard to find, all the shops here still only have the old non-bonded version.  You might be able to find it on line if you search hard enough.
