You often hear it said that all service calibers perform roughly the same when quality ammo is used.  While in gelatin, expanded sizes are usually pretty close, I never see it posted at what depth of penetration these bullets fully expand.  The reason I ask is because a .45acp is already at .45 cal when it enters flesh/gelatin etc, but a 9mm is only at .355.  While it may eventually achieve a much larger profile as it travels in the gelatin, initially, it's comparative wound channel would be a good bit smaller than that of a .45acp, would it not?  It would seem to me that that would have some bearing on its relative lethality.  Just curious what the gurus here at arfcom think about this, and wether it is significant enough to make a difference when selecting a defensive caliber.  FWIW, 9mm is my defensive caliber of choice, so not trying to say one is superior to another, just looking for some education.

Modern JHP's are fully expanded by about .5-1.5" penetration depth.
