This weekend my girlfriend and I did some testing with some 9mm JHP's

We tested 115 gr JHP Remington bulk pack, and 147 gr JHP Golden Sabers

They were fired at a distance of 10 ft, the 115 into household gelatin (Jello) and the 147 was fired into water jugs.  No diffence in expansion noticed.  Much easier to do the water method.

147 gr JHP Golden Saber:

115 gr JHP:

For the expansion measurements, remember that they both started out at .355 inch.

The 115gr JHP retained 99.9% of it's wgt.  The 147 lost 1gr.

Both were fired out of a Browning High Power

Velocities at 10 ft were:

115:  1125 fps
147:  1030 fps

Oh yeah, it was very cold doing this, something like -5 degrees Farenheit actual.

I would feel safe carrying either.

Looks like you had a more fun weekend than I did, great looking test!

Good test.
How did the Jello work out?
Nice to see that 9mm isn't just for plinkin.

Very informative, thanks.

That the 147 GS expanded to .747" is just unbelievable! Looks like the ammunition manufacturers have really made great strides in lessening the performance "gap" between the 9mm and the .45 A.C.P.

About 50% of the 147 GS I have fired into water jugs experienced core/jacket separation. Have you seen this too?

I fired 1 rd due to the cold.  So I will have a hard time honestly answer that question.

Read the original post again, Nate, Jello wasn't worth the effort.

That is amazing; that is expanding from 9mm to 18mm.  Not that you could draw any real math from that but a .45 may expand to 1 inch in that brand of ammo.

Yeah, that Golden Sabre ammo by Rem is great anti-personnel stuff. That is my first choice for both of my home defense rounds in 9mm and 40 S&W.

The only comparison testing you can do with water jugs is expansion.  With gelatin you can compare not only expansion but penetration and permanent cavity as well.  Yes, you can line jugs up and shoot into them, but it's hard to get any accurate penetration as you can't tell how far into the last jug it penetrated before it stopped.  Also, without placing some kind of barrier in front of and between your jugs or gelatin you're looking at a best case scenario, a naked, boneless bad guy who's not in a car, behind a barrier and who's presenting you a frontal target.

Last time I did gel tests I made the gelatin in milk jugs and left it there for the testing, it made it much easier than making gel blocks, was way easier to handle and gave me more info than if I had just filled them with water.  It also made it easier to place barriers between blocks.

Still, I give you an A+ for effort, for using a specially fine gun to do this with, for taking the GF along and because it was freaking cold.  And if nothing else, it's always fun to shoot stuff.

AKvsAR

i didn't intend on doing any testing at the range today (not that you could call what i did a test). I had a box of:

Rem gold saber .45 cal 230 gr JHP

My kid and me shot a couple milk jugs and found a shot bullet. I remembered your post and this is what i got from the "not test" .

The bullet started as .45 and ended as .74 or started as 11.4mm and ended as 19mm.  I cant weigh it...sorry.  From my one recovered bullet "test"; it expanded perfective and almost doubled in width.

Back in the Mid 90`s I tested / PLAYED with the WIN SILVER TIP 115 JHP

The factory load mushroom just a tad BARELY  ( UNDER LOADED AMMO  )

My Reload of  HS6 + 115gr Silver Tip

THE BULLET PANCAKED FLAT !!

there werent much back then to pick from

OLD SKOOL FLYING ASHTRAY CCI Lawman 45 acp WHAT A COOL BULLET

The improved GOLD DOTS  ( wich all mushroom nicely 9mm/40sw/38/357)

XTP  I found that my SIG P229 like this bullet alot  in 180gr( ragged hole groups)
Good Penetration but dont mushroom like G.D. The 9mm 147 xtp penetrated deeply

Silver Tips expanded pretty damn good, But FACTORY ammo is to slow

wc in 38spl I would reload BACKWARDS it would mushroom pretty good
but I would use only up close

SWC H.P. pentertates pretty darn good and mushrooms a bit

It was Fun Playing since my range was my yard at the time
Now I cant do it anymore since moveing to SWFL
