So you walk around all day with your Speer Gold Dots or what have you in your carry gun. Hopefully you never HAVE to fire them, but after how much time goes by is it a good idea to get NEW ammunition?

i fire off my carry ammo every 6 months and buy new stuff.  i am poor so that is usually the only practice i get with my carry ammo.

ive been carrying for less than a month now and I've only fired what carry ammo i couldnt fit into the chamber of my gun or the two magazines..... that's 3 rounds.... they fed fine at rapid fire, but when i have some more money i will buy a mag's worth and really test them out.

after 6 months do you find that your ammunition still feeds and fires properly?(kept in controlled climate most of the time i assume)

I generally cycle the ammo every 3 months.

i haven't found a problem in terms of feeding or firing.  but i practice with 115gr fmj cheapo ammo--mosty blazer brass.  and i carry 124gr hornady tap.  there isn't much difference as far as i can tell when it comes to firing them but there is some--flash and bang mostly.  so i like to practice with it now and again so i know what to expect.

Every Month.

When selecting carry ammo be sure to fire 200 to 500 rounds to make sure it functions in your gun.

Is wise to rotate your ammo in your magazines every month if you carry them because they tend to deform after awhile.

As to judging reliability cycle each magazine manualy (preferably at a range) if you dont feel any hang ups and 98% of 150-200 rounds fire without a problem then it will work for carry.

You could always put 500-1,000 down range but they only sale 25 round boxes to civis at around $20 dollars a box.

I pay $18/50 for Federal HST in .45ACP and $14/50 for the same in 9mm.

I do as the local sheriff dept does, and shoot up the old and buy new once a year.

Depends on the gun, but usually every 6 months to 1 year. There should be no problems with this unless something really odd happend, such as the gun getting soaked in salt water, etc.

I cycle my ammo when I feel like it.  Modern ammo is made to withstand a lot of carry conditions.

I've never had a problem with any ammo I carried for any length of time.  It works for me.

Cycle your ammo when you think you should.

I still have some 230 gr Hydra-shoks that I bought in 1994. The heads look nothing like modern HS (more like truncated pyramids). Haven't fired those, but in Dec, I fired some Winchester FMJ that was at least that old. I think that the most important thing is that you don't chamber the same round over and over again. if you clear the weapon for whatever reason, rack the top round in the mag then empty the mag and put that round in the bottom, replacing the rounds on top of it & insert the mag. I had a friend who rechamber the shit out of this one round. I caught it when he cleared one day. The freaking round was pushed so far into the case, it looked like it had foreskin! I told him he needed to ditch it because there is kaboom risk with all the extra chamber pressure thus generated. You should be good for at LEAST a year. If you can afford to practice with carry ammo, then do it whenever necessary.
