For me, the 357SIG lies between the 9mm and 40SW but it has most of the flaws of both: The 357 doesn't have the useful bullet mass of the 40SW (that gets the consistent penetration/expansion) but it has the reduced mag capacity and (almost) the recoil of the 40SW. One could load up 9mm to 357SIG spec (9mm major) but you pass the point of diminishing returns for a .355 bullet that can be fired out of a handgun. For a properly designed .355 bullet between 115-147gr there is little benefit from an extra 150FPS against humans. Back in the 90's, gaining an extra 150FPS did give an advantage in penetrating AND expanding that old bullet designs at standard 9mm velocity couldn't provide. Today, in 2026, the ONLY thing the 357SIG does better than 9mm, 40SW, and especially 45ACP is penetrate hard cover and give a flatter trajectory. Both better covered by rifles that are ubiquitous today. |

The most salient point is effective shot placement is KING. Operators have to be proficient shooters, which comes through solid fundamentals and diligent practice. Armed with good guns and decent ammo everything else is moot. |
