I'm planning on buying a Smith & Alexander MSH/magwell that SA uses on their Professional model (FBI). Before I knock the MSH pin out should I know anything else to keep me from screwing it up? Thanks. |

I take the slide off and make sure the hammer is all the way forward, putting less resistance on it for removal. Other than that, make sure the "3 fingered" spring is in place before shoving the new MSH home, guiding the hammer strut into the spring cap. They may even come with directions, which would be nice too. |
| If you are unfamilar with the disassembly and assembly of a 1911, get an extra set of hands to help you, it will be benefical. (The reason for this is you will probably have to remove the spring and plunger out of the old MSH and install in the new one.)Remove slide from frame. Hammer must be fully forward. Remove MSH pin. Slide MSH partily out of frame. Before you completely remove the MSH from the frame have your helper insert a finger between the frame rails under the grip safety holding the 3 finger mainspring in place. This will prevent the spring from becoming unseated at the sear and disconector. (If spring becomes unseated at sear, it will require further disassembly.) Remove MSH completely from frame. Remove the spring and plunger from old MSH by putting it in a vise, depress plunger and remove retaining pin. Reinstall plunger, spring and pin in new MSH. Install new part back on to frame sliding leading edge of new MSH over spring, remove helpers finger, depress grip safety, line up hammer strut with plunger in MSH and slide into place. Replace pin in bottom of MSH. |
