Take a look over at the "Refinishing" area, lots of info there.  In a nutshell, air dry, rattle can, spray on coatings are cheap, easy to apply, and least durable.  We're talking about Krylon, Aluma-Hyde, etc.  Bake on coatings applied with an air-brush last longer, but are more expensive.  Dura-Coat seems to be the most widely known.  Cere-Coat and KG Gun Kote seem to be the toughest.  Metal prep and degreasing is the keys to sucess.

I use Gunkote and it works well.  As said above, prep, prep, prep.  Here's an example of the difference.  The mag on the left was NOT media blasted and the one on the right was blasted.  The left one had its finish wear off after just a few cycles.  The right one has been in and out 100+ times.

The baking process is critical on Gunkote, too.  A little too hot and light colors will darken.  Check your oven temp with a separate thermometer.
