I'm thinking of picking up one of these.  Only problem is that I have never seen or shot one in person.  How is the grip?  I imagine being a single stack the grip is relatively small...or at least thin...is this true?  How does it compare to the grip of a 1911?

Bigger.

A 1911 feels right at home in my admittedly small hands, 3rd-gen S&W .45s (I own a couple) feel noticeably bigger... but still manageable, nothing like a USP-45 or the like.

I have 2 4506's and 2 4566's(same gun shorter slide) and find the grips to be perfect. I have small hands too. I ever carry my 4506 in a IWB holster with no problems and is comfortable. Look at RM holsters "Low Rider" model.

I hated mine, grips were way too big. I could barly reach the slide release with my thumb. I wear a large size glove so my hands aren't small or anything.

liked mine.  Great gun, great DA trigger.  Grip is bigger than a 1911 but not much and certainly not uncomfortable.

Been carrying one for 20+ years.  Grip is a little wider front to back but about the same as a 1911 left to right.  I have medium size hands.  I think the 3rd gen Smiths are among the best ever made.  Gun will shoot forever.

Thanks guys, what would a fair price be for a like new 4506 made in 1999 be?  From pics of the particular gun for sale it has a shrouded rear sight.  I'm guessing this is an adjustable target type sight?

It's an adjustable sight....good sights but look a little big/funny but unique to Smith. I'd say a like new 4506 would go for $500 or so. I bought a bunch of beat up ones for $399 each a couple years ago and prices are going up on these and all 3rd gen Smiths. I've seen unfired ones go for $650. Offer $400 and see if they bite but don't go over $500. The 4506 is a truly great 45 that will last forever even with heavy use. Here is one of mine:

I had one that I bought used way back in '93. It was a police trade-in that looked like it stayed in the box instead of a holster, looked new and unfired. It is definitely a bigger gun. I do not have small hands either. I didn't have a hard time reaching the trigger, but it does have a bigger grip and to me didn't feel like a 1911. That gun fired everything I put through it from factory ball ammo, hollow points and even my handloads of 200 grain SWC lead target loads. It was 100% reliable. However I sold it for $400 eleven years ago.
