Looking to potentially buy a new 45 to replace the para ord I just sold.

I'm Hoping that i can find a pistol with similar accuracy to the old one (could hit 6" plates at 50yds extremely easy) the biggest problem with
the last pistol was my mistake in getting Stainless steel.

This would be a carry gun, and I've heard too many stories of 9mm not doing the job (A local CCW guy shot a robber 7 times in the chest
and he managed to get up , and walk away).

Never the less i've been looking at FN , and the XDm in addition to the M&P. The M&P felt really really nice in my hand, but I haven't had
a chance to put any rounds through one yet.

Anything I should really consider before getting one?

You should consider renting one at a range and trying it.  Along with a XD, FN and Glock.

That was an idea that I had , i'm sure they'll let me use one.

As a site note , a good friend of me is legally blind and owns a M&P , he really likes it and i guess is quite accurate with it.

Perhaps Lasik surgery?

Nope , I guess his vision allows him to only see about 10yds in front of him , I'll have to try and get him here. I know for some reason
he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a glock/XD, but outshot the majority of people in his CCW Class.

The CCW'er was shooting FMJ. I wouldn't be surprised if he walked away from 45 FMJ. But the guy still died.

I own a M&P .45 Compact and a XDM 9mm. I bought them both at the same time, and have put 150 rounds through each.

The M&P shot great right from the box, didn't seem to need a break-in period. Very accurate with Winchester white box and no feed problems. The only issues I have with the M&P is it shipped without the small back strap. I need to contact S&W to get one. Also, when taking the gun apart to clean, I have a hard time moving the lever down so I can push the slide off. The lever is spring loaded and I just can not seem to get it on the first couple of trys. The quality is second to none.

The XDM also shoots great with Winchester white box and no feed problems. I have a hard time loading the magazines all the way. Even when I use the supplied mag loader, it is hard to get the last couple of rounds in. The plastic does feel kind of cheap. The walls of the grip are thin to make room for the 19 rounds of 9mm. I do find it easier to take down the XDM for cleaning.

I could not decide between the two, that is why I bought both. After shooting both I perfer the M&P. My friend with much larger hands, has a hard time shooting the M&P compact and loves my XDM. The XDM will be his next gun.

For carry, it will be the M&P for me. The compact is much easier for me to hide. I use the XDM as my bedroom gun, I sleep good knowing I have 19 rounds ready when needed.

Just dry fire it. Like a Glock. I've never used the lever.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Are all the M&Ps at 10+1? I'm really wanting something with a 14 or so capacity (I see the longer mags, but they seem really really big).

The 45 compact is 8. The midsize and fullsize are 10.

Any 45 with 14 rounds and non-extended mags is going to have a very different grip profile.

If you want a lot of rounds, and you want to CCW, stick with 9mm.

And if you don't want people to run away after you shoot them 7 times in the chest, don't carry FMJ.
