Went to the local gun show with a WASR and traded it for a 6" blued model 29. Always wanted one. Is there a way to tell when it was produced?

Don't know how to pull the exact dates (I'm sure someone will be along that does) - in the meantime, however, you can look at the model number on the frame under the crane.

Open the action and look on the revealed portion of the frame beneath the barrel - it will say 29-*something*, such as 29-3 or 29-5.

Once you know the dash number you can reference this article to at least determine the time frame it was made in, as well as the particulars of that model.

Awesome score, btw - my 29 is one of my most beloved pistols.

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson will get you as close as is possible without obtaining a factory letter. Quite a few of us here have the Catalog and can give you an approximate date based on the first few digits of the serial number.

I'm going to guess(because I can't find that prefix listed specifically) 1998 due to the fact that CCM and CCN were used that year.

Well it doesn't have that stupid lock on it.
Thanks for the info.
