Simple question that I can't find the answer to on SW's website. Is the airlight model 638 "Bodyguard" hammer style Double action only, or can you pull the hammer, and make it single?

I want one of these for carry, but I'd like the option of pulling a hammer. I -don't- like the idea of the hammer catching on something while I draw it.

Thanks.

It's DA/SA.  Hammer is shrouded for pocket carry, but can be thumbed back for single-action.

Rab:

As with all of the J-frame "Bodyguard" revolvers the recessed hammer CAN be cocked manually (or fe-manually ) for a single action shot.  Obviously unless you cock the hammer after each shot then each shot would be double-action.

Two things..

Just a word about the EXCELLENT target trigger that comes standard on the 638..  It is nice and wide, smooth (no serrated groves as with older J-frames) and is VERY, VERY good..

Crimson Trace makes three models of their fine Lasergrips for the J-frame.  The original small (boot grip style) 205's, the larger 305's (not very popular), and the most recent, 405's..  The 405's apparently incorporate the best features of the first two models and seem to be the most preferred model.  I have had the original 205's for years on my 638 and have no desire to change them.

The addition of CT's on your J-frame will change the snubby from being difficult to shoot accurately without a lot of practice to a "tack driver" at any reasonable self defense range.

I recommend the 638 AND the CT's without reservation.

Best Wishes,

Jesse
