I happened into an old S&W revolver.  I'm not sure of the model/type.  I need a good website that might have pictures which I can compare it to.

Thanks!

Well, I found out that it is a Model 1899 M & P.  It is a very low serial number 126XX which I think places it before 1903.  Again that is speculative because I still haven't found a site that can give me more detailed information.  I looked through a couple of books I have at home for the identification.

My next question is:  Is it safe to fire modern ammunition?  Obviously it can't handle +P but I was hoping it would be okay to fire standard pressure ammunition.

Anyone know?

The serial number that gun has places it between 1899 and 1902. Pictures and a complete description of the gun would help identify exactly what it is--beyond the M&P of 1899 designation.

I probably wouldn't run factory ammo through it, other than wadcutter loads. I would suggest calling S&W and asking them when it was manufactured. They will also be able to tell you whether it's strong enough for use with modern ammo. Since the .38 special was originally loaded with black powder, I wouldn't bet on it with a gun that old.

It could also be chambered for the .38 Long Colt cartridge instead of .38 Special.
