I would like to get one to have mainly as a shooter.  Anything to watch out for - age, bbl length, price, etc...

I dont want to keep it in a box -

I have found the 4-5" models to balance best for me. I prefer the Model 29 Classic with the full lugged barrel versus the "skinny" barrel of the Model 29.

As far as I know, there's no bad run or year(s) for the 29s. Someone else can come along & add/change this, no doubt.

Pricing has been leveling off a bit  after slowly climbing for the last 3-4 years. A nice used 29 will be in the $450 range, a 29 Classic in the $500-550 range, IMO.

Good luck!

The bad ones have locks on them.

I love my 6"  29-2 that is pinned and recessed!!!  It is well-worn, but is still one of the most accurate handguns that I own!!!

Don't get a 29-3. If you are going to shoot a lot of hot loads the 29-4 and later are most desirable. If cosmetics are most important, the 29, 29-1 and 29-2 are most desirable. Actually the 29 with no dash is worth a lot of scratch.

thanks for the responses

one more thing - whats the difference between 29-1, -2, -3 etc.... ?  year, generation,?

Generation. Each time there is a notable change in design a new dash number is assigned. So the 29-3 is the first that isn't pinned and recessed, and the 29-4 is beefed up for hotter loads.

Picking nits here, but there was also a 29-3E version that was actually the first beefed-up version. The changes were later put into the -4.
