......Update,S&W confirmed that it is a mold makrk.......I have emailed S&W so I can send it to them to look at.I just wanted some opinions if this is a crack or just a mold defect? Not the best pic,but you can see it just right of the mold line.I wiped the powder residue off with some solvent. When I dried it off there was a wet line left.

Casting mark, IMO. A crack wouldn't be so straight, it would weave a bit, maybe a lot?

I should have been better in my description. Its the curved line to the right of the mold line. Its a little hard to see but it goes into the curve of the first rail

I suppose you also sent the pic to them in the email? I agree with Bob...casting mark...probably.

Got the same curve mark on mine. It's just a casting mark. Just like the straight line.

great,I was hoping it wasn't anything.I did send them the picture in the email.I probably would not have even noticed it if I hadn't wiped the end off. What concerned me was that it wasn't raised up like the regular mold make is.It actually held the solvent when I wiped it.

Sounds like there are some other guys that have the same mark.  It could possibly be that it was dinged in the manufacturing process or shipment and it is merely cold work.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it appears as though the bottom of the mark is visible.  If so, it is probably from the casting process.

Try taking it out in the sunlight at looking at the mark at different angles, you might be able to discern if there is something going on at the bottom.

If you really want to know have it tested with MPI, or LPI if it isn't ferritic enough, that will tell you for sure.

If there is a welding shop or any kind of industry around where you live there should be some NDT available if you really want to know.
