I have never owned a SW and looking hard at a Shield 9mm for CCW.  I have been shooting for 45 years mostly 1911s, Glocks and Sigs and feel very comfortable and well trained on the cocked and locked safety of a1911, so this is not an issue.

What I do not feel comfortable with is my Glock 26 IWB carry, never have .  My bedside pistol is my G19 and my truck gun is a 229 in .40

The Shield appeals to me with the thumb safety especially with IWB or appendix carry.

I have read the comments on the forum, looked at YouTube and see a lot of good comments, is this the overall assessments?

Reliability issues do not seem to be mentioned from what I have seen or read, again is this the overall assessment?

Handled one today at the LGS, felt good, very narrow in the hand.  Thumb safety seem to be well located and easy to disengage

Am I off base in my assessments?  May pick one up this weekend.  The price at the LGS was $399. Is this a good price.

Thanks in advance for comments.

Plenty of us around here that like the Shield a lot.  They are a great compromise of size, weight, and capacity.  Easy to carry IWB.  I have had mine for about 2.5yrs.  It is my primary carry gun.  Decent stock trigger, but I added the APEX duty kit which cleaned up the trigger nicely.

I am a left and when I bought mine there were no safetiless models out.  I always carry with the safety off and have never had it move even after long carry days and getting in and out of the car.  Mine has feed everything from defensive rounds to cheap steel cased ammo.

I've had one for about five months, had zero reliability issues. 400rds or so.

I picked it up for $329.99.

I bought 6 extra magazines from www.gunmagwarehouse.com for $18.xx each…… And I think they're still on sale

The best place to price check guns is www.slickguns.com… It looks like a few places are selling them for $320

I have one with the safety also and it's a perfect carry gun. I also have been shooting for many years and prefer a safety or de-cocker. No issues with any ammo at all and I use a Stealth Gear for IWB and a Bear River for OWB.

My Shield 9 was just one of those guns you pick up for the first time and say "wow, I need to have this." It just felt so right in my hand.

2 years and hundreds of rounds later I still love it. It's a great gun that fits many tasks. It's my truck gun at times as well as an IWB when my clothing permits

You cant go wrong with the Shield.

If you're set on having an additional safety for carry, check out the xds too.

I have had mine a week tomorrow, 350 rounds, one failure to fire with wolf classic, the dud had a nice deep primer indentation, it did fire on the second try. I carry it in an IWB holster I bought from Amazon, leather, made in California for $28.

Mine has the safety, but other than testing it to insure it worked I don't use it.

I wanted something just a little smaller than my SD9 to carry, it was between this and the LCP. IMO I made the right choice.

I bought my Shield about 3 years ago and it now has about 1400rds thru it with NO problems of any type. Works for me!!

I have a full size M&P .40 and a Shield .40, both with the Apex DCAK.  My Shield is a bit more accurate than the full size.
Both of mine are the no safety models.

Well I pulled the trigger so to speak and picked up the Shield in 9mm last evening.  Took it apart and lubed with Slip 2000 and ready for the range today. I am bringing ball ammo along with some Speer GDs to try.

After being so used to my Sigs and Glocks coming apart so easy, using a screwdriver to push down that lever is different.

As far as the gun construction, it looks to be very well made, feels very solid in the hand.

What I don't understand is the cheap poly spacer on the 8 round mag.  Looks like it may have to be removed to disassemble the magazine, so that may be the reason.

One other comment, even though I have not shot it yet, I really like the trigger.  After reading so many comments on the trigger, unless I am missing something, I do not see an issue.  Granted it is not like one of my tuned Glocks or my Sig SRT, I put it just as good or if not better than a stock Glock.  Range time today may prove different...we will see.

Range report to following tonight.

Shield is my favorite single stack 9mm pistol for an IWB gun. I prefer no safety however, just another thing you have to do before firing, but that's personal preference as well. Just be sure to train drawing and disengaging the safety so you build that muscle memory. Having no safety requires less training and that's why it's generally preferred. As long as you have a good holster to protect the trigger it's of no safety concern. I would probably upgrade the trigger with a Apex kit. And the sights with Trijicon HD night sights. That's what I did to it's bigger brother the M&P 9 full size and I love it.

You don't have to use the sear disconnect lever if you don't want to, you can dry fire it like a glock to disassemble.

Late range report

Went to the range Sunday afternoon with the new Shield..I was very impressed, shot about 100 rounds hitch included 16 rounds of Federal PD ammo.  The recoil was not bad for a small thin pistol.  Was shooting at 8 yards, grouped very well, the trigger was not bad at all.  Shot my G26 along side of it and have to say I like the Shield as much as the Glock.  Now I have been shooting Glocks since the early 1990s and they are fantastic, but if the larger M&Ps are anything like the Shield, I may pick up a full size 9mm down the road.

More shooting this weekend, will try some Speer GDs, as this is my favorite PD ammo.

Thanks for the replies.
