M&P shooters:
My grip just so happens to land my right hand thumb (right handed shooter) right on the slide stop on my M&P9 full size. This is causing my slide to not lock back on an empty mag. The thumb is just barely touching. If I hold it off to the left of the frame it's a non-issue, but I don't want to have to change grip styles between pistols or have to make a conscious effort to move my thumb each time I grab it... I've tried all three back straps, with no significant changes. Any suggestions? Are there any aftermarket slide stops that are lower profile? If it didn't have that bump out on the top part of the stop, I don't think it would be an issue. I'm even considering just milling/filing it down myself, but that's a last resort. Of course, my Glock buddies are all telling me to sell it and buy a Glock, but I really like it and hate to part with it over this one issue. I'm having a POA/POI issue, but that's in another thread. Any suggestions are appreciated! I can get a picture too if needed. Thank you! |

I did come across another forum discussing the issue - it's a difficult one to Google search for. They suggested ensuring your using a true thumbs forward grip, which involves rotating your left hand forward/down before gripping. It's something I've been working on with my 1911 too. Apparently I've not been doing it well enough, because when I really focus on getting that grip correct, my right hand thumb remains clear of the slide stop lever.
I'll have to practice this next time at the range to see if it's the fix! Either that or some are recommending a grip Sig users use due to the same issue - they move their right hand thumb completely off the gun and onto the support/left hand. Sig Grip |

Marksman,
I've seen many shooters with this problem. The best fix IMHO that does not force you to change your grip is to simply remove the tab on that side of the lever. Examine your grip closely compared to the level, and decide for yourself where you want to cut it off at. You can also just file down the grooves to make it smooth and hopefully less engaging. |
