I recently purchased an M&P40 Full Size and put one of my older 9mm barrels in it.  When I have a round chambered, and remove the mag, cycle the slide the round falls out through the mag well.  The same thing happens if I actually shoot the round with the mag released, the empty case falls through mag well.  (As opposed to flying free as my other four M&P do)

This does not happen when I am shooting it 40 Caliber or racking the slide with a forty caliber round (Again when magazine is removed)

In all situations if the magazine is inserted (9mm or 40cal) the round ejects properly.

So, I believe the extractor is not grabbing the case of the 9mm is firm enough.  Now, I can't send it back to S&W because it works as designed as a 40 Caliber; but I want this situation corrected in case I ever use the gun for competition.

I'm considering an Apex Failure Resistant Extractor, any other suggestions?

Thanks

FRE may help. However, beware of using a standard 9mm barrel in your 40 slide... I recall reading somewhere that the barrel may not lock up properly, resulting in wear to the slide. ETA: If the barrel is not locking up properly, you could have premature unlocking resulting in poor extraction. Might want to search a bit on this first.

The FRE has a more generous hook on it than the OEM extractor. I never had an issue out of the 40 with a 9mm barrel, although my 40 was fairly new.

The Apex extractor is steel as opposed to MiM like the OEM extractor. I have been told by those that know more about the M&P platform, that a steady diet of steel case ammo, like Tula or Wolf can wear out the OEM MiM extractor.

My 9mm saw a very steady diet of steel  cased ammo. Thousands and thousands of rounds. When I started shooting USPSA and at the same time reloading for USPSA,  I started experiencing multiple failures to extract with brass ammo. I bought a Apex FRE. When I removed the OEM extractor, the hook was worn and not as deep. Also the hook gets very dirty, lots of carbon build-up. Keep it clean.

Since then, I have shot nearly 3 thousand rounds with no failures to extract.

I would try it, if the pistol has several thousand or more rounds through it.

It could also that the newer M&P's have different tolerances than others. How's the fit of the barrel? Loose or fairly tight?

It's a new pistol, barrel seems average.  I think I'll rotate one of my other 9mm barrels in and see if that makes a difference first.  Thanks.

Do you have a set of dial calipers?

If so, do what I did in the thread http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_5_16/104694_9mm_MandP_barrel_in_a__40_SandW_a_photo_comparison_UPDATE_IN_OP_Range_test.html and measure the slide.

I would like to see if the dimensions from the earlier 40's are the same as the newer ones.
