I have several M&Ps and I'm wanting to get a VTAC and the only reason is just for the color.

Can you add an M&P Thumb safety to a VTAC?
(I have Thumb Safeties on all my other M&Ps)

Yes you can add thumb safeties to it. You will have to buy the thumb safety and the spring and detent. Speed Shooter Specialties should have all you need.

The VTAC does look great. I'm with you though, no safety, no VTAC. Nice to know it has the cutouts to add a thumb safety.

I'm really thinking about the cerakote, just not sure of durability but then I here of durability issues with the VTAC coating issues.

I had my Glock 17 frame cerakoted and it has held up pretty well.  The only exterior wear is under the slide stop.  That might be a different story if my silde was painted since my Raven Phantom doesn't actually contact my pistol's frame (only the slide and the TLR-1S).  Don't worry about wear though; a little wear is sexy.  It means your weapon actually does stuff.

You can add the thumb safety.  I bought mine fore the same reason, sold the sights and replaced with the trijicon HD.

I have heard of the vtac rubbing off the color as well but I have drawn and holstered my vtac hundreds of times and the only spot that shows some wear is on the right side of the slide under the barrel and is barely noticable. So I really don't think that's a concern.

I have heard stories of the slide wear as well and was curious how durable the finish on the VTAC is.

Plan on using a kydex holster.

As an owner of a VTAC that actually gets some use...I can tell you the finish will not last nearly as long as the standard black finish.  The FDE finishes (Older Gold and Newer FDE) simply do not hold up as well when drawing from kydex during training.

if you just want the color, M&P makes a tan one. and much cheaper than the  VTAC . You are just paying for the sights on the  VTAC  which I never cared for myself. tan or black M&P is the same price.

I have a standard M&P 9 in tan and have about 9K rounds through it and it has seen its dirty days. Finish looks like new on it. Not sure if they use a different coating but mine has held up well.

So the difference between the Vtac and stock is just the color and sights?

No trigger work?

You could buy a used M&P and send it to www.customizedcreationz.com to have it refinished however you like.  They do a great job.  I had 3 old surplus Sigs done and they look like new.  The guy does a great job!  I'm not sure how polymer guns refinish, but he'll be able to tell you.  You pay a premium for the VTAC sights.  I bought a set of sights from a guy who wanted the FDE color gun but didn't like the sights.  The sights are pretty much what the VTAC model is all about!
