My main desire is for competition purposes. Is the regular model adequate enough out of the box for IDPA style, or is the extra coin worth getting the pro? I realize the aftermarket capabilities for the m&p but more curious to out of the box adequacy. Are the guts the same from the standard to the pro? Thanks for the info.

When the "L" was available I would agree with the previous poster. Apex upgraded guns have a significantly better trigger than the "Pro" factory guns. However, I believe the "L" has been discontinued, and that would mean the "Pro" is the only way to get the 5" barreled format.
MP9 = 4.25" barrel, standard guts Pro = 5" barrel, improved sear (though not as improved as Apex) L = 5" barrel with standard guts If you don't want the 5" barrel and sight radius, I would purchase a standard gun and upgrade it to your liking. |

If your true desire is a gun that can compete right out of the box...then youre looking at the Pro. It has a longer sight radius, plain black rear sight, fiber optic front, and an upgraded trigger.
If your desire is to ultimately upgrade and modify...then youre going to replace the trigger and sights anyway. Another reason it baffles me that S&W discontinued the M&PL... |

IMHO, probably trying to sell more of the Pro, and generate more revenue than the L series did. |

Has anyone ever missed a Alpha with a m&p and confirmed that if they had the pro they could've got double alphas? |

IME, the longer sight radius allows to me to get off accurate shots a little faster. Inside 15 yards it doesn't really make a difference, but beyond that I don't have to get as precise of sight alignment as I do on the shorter barreled M&Ps. You asked about out-of-the-box competition readiness, and that's exactly what the Pro is designed for with its longer sight radius, competition sights, and lighter Performance Center sear. Yes, there are better aftermarket options for the sights and trigger, but the Pro parts are still an upgrade over standard. FWIW, I've been competing with a stock Pro for several years in IPSC, 3-gun, and the occasional IDPA match. I have other M&Ps with difference aftermarket sights and Apex parts, but I've found the stock Pro adequate enough. |

I've competed with the m&p9 and got in the middle of the pack percentage wise. I want to step up to major and have been eyeing the. 40 pro but just wasn't sure if it was worth it or dump money into the m&p I have and just run with that. |

The biggest advantage the longer barrel would give you is the extra velocity to make major with a lighter load. |
