| Alright. here goes. I have had my M&P 40 for over 2years now. I recently got it back from SW from warranty repair. My slide was changing colors on me. I just got it back a little bit ago and shot it for a weekend (400 rounds) no problem. Now all of a sudden my slide release is stiff as hell when I depress it with my thumb. It takes crazy force to move it. What the hell happened? Sometimes I have to grab both sides to release it (ambi slide release). It wasn't like this before I sent it in and it wasn't like this right after it got back. I do not sling shot my pistols. I use the slide lock/release. It is what it was designed for. Even the manual says it so please no one tell me to sling shot it. |

The notch in the slide for the release may be cut differently. FWIW neither of my M&P's slide locks work as a release. I have to pull the slide back, the lever ain't moving... That was my initial thought too in which case I would just take a bit of the top surface of the release tab but the thing that keeps hanging me up is that it worked before and now it does not. I don't get it. |

Because the notch in the new slide is either rough or enough of a different angle that your old slide stop needs to wear in.
Try this: pull the top end off and "feel" how smooth the bearing surface of the notch is using an Xacto knife or a dental pick. I'll bet it's pretty rough, you might even see tool marks that are aggravating the problem. |
| I called S&W and spoke with the same guy as before about the my last issue. He said to send it back and they will fix it for me. He told me he will hopefully get it back in two weeks becuase it is something they should've caught before sending it back the first time. It sucks to have to send it back again but it is worth since this is one of the finest handguns I have ever owned. It has been flawless up until now. The last time I sent it in was for cosmetic reasons. You can't beat good customer service. |
| Well I set out for the range today with my M&P before I was going to send it off for repairs for the slide release. I decided to grease the notch on the slide in hopes that it will function better and after about 3 mags it actually started working! I could fire the last round drop the mag, insert a new one and depress the release and it would slam home. I called S&W and let them know and I asked if they could let me know if anything but the slide was replaced when I had it in before. They couldn't give me answers on the spot but said that there is a good chance they replaced the slide stop and springs when they replaced the slide. I guess mine just needed a little wearing in again. It works now with no grease or lube. It actually works better than when I first got the gun 2 years ago. The slide release only works on mag with rounds in it. It won;t slam with no mag (not that it hurts the gun) which is nice. Originally you could depress the release and it slammed home with mag or no mag. I am just happy to be up and running again and not having to wait for repairs. |

This is interesting. First time to the range after installing the Apex DCAEK kit, and now when I slam home a loaded magazine, my slide releases automagically! I was able to replicate that consistently too. So I am having the opposite experience. What is your round count? |

I don't have an exact number, but it's under 1000 since I bought it. I figured out yesterday, it only does it when I slam home a loaded mag. unloaded mags don't exhibit the problem. one attempt to replicate resulted in a less than stellar feed, with the guide rode sticking out he front partially (slide didn't go all the way forward). I had a time getting that one unloaded as the slide didn't want to come back, but eventually it did. That was a frightening moment. Talked to another arf'er and he said his XD does the same thing. Not sure it's a huge deal really, since it actually removes a step from the loading process (technically). My concern is the gun does something that I don't tell it to do. EDIT: Nevermind, I found this thread on another forum, and reread my manual. 3rd bold red warning on page 16 of the owner's manual: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/204160-m-ps-auto-forward.html |
