Mag rust???!!!! > Smith & Wesson

Damn, a month after moving to Hawaii and 3 of 4 M&P45 mags have rust all over them! In my night stand! Never had a problem even spending a year in the garage on texas. How can I prevent this? Constant heavy oil? You'd think smith would have use a more rust resistant finish

I wipe my mags down with a silicone-treated gun cloth every time I shoot that gun, or about once a month if they're just sitting somewhere or have been in my duty mag pouch. Never had a problem with rust that way, and I live in the humid South.

Way back had a few old GI 1911 mags that ran 110% but were VERY succeptible to rust. I tried oil...that collected lint and dirt. Finally degreased them and gave them a good coating of Johnson Paste Wax...oft used for furniture...worked fine. Still use JPW on gun stocks, metal on hunting rifles/shotguns...great stuff. Regular car wax like turtle wax would probably be OK too.

Or...A light coating of RIG rust preventative grease. OR..have them refinished with one of the new super finishes?

Do you have the blue or silver ones? the silver ones were supposed to fix the rust issues

Yep..there was a issue with the blue ones rusting, hence why the newer ones are sliver in finish.

Silver Ones? Are the other calibers going to be cut over too?

No. The other calibers use a matte spray-on finish.

According to what i have read on the interwebs, The NH ST police was having rusting problems with the mags on their MP45's. SW put the new silver finish on it to solve the problem. Lot of folks,myself included,thought they were dull stainless at first.

Yeah they are the blues ones. Like I said, oddly, one of the mags shows no rust at all. Going to get some oil and grease this weekend to clean them up and protect them.

I would call up SW and explain the situation and see if they might swap out for some new ones
