Just got a 442 last week. The finish has already worn off where the nub that's under tension rubs the frame when it closes. If you look at the frame when the cylinder is open there is a worn streak going outward, that doesn't bother me but the finish has sort of chipped off on the rounded part of the frame where theta meet. Is this normal wear? This is my first revolver.

Eta. The part I'm talking about is the half oval shaped part of the frame just in front of the cylinder release. The chip is actually on the front edge of this.

Is it new?  Mine hasn't done that.  I agree the finish isn't my favorite.  We'll see how long mine is.  If yours is new I would contact Smith and Wesson for warranty.

It was bought brand new. I still haven't shot it yet. Gun looked perfect when I got it..  This is just from opening and closing the cyinder. Seemed very tight at first.  I don't really want to pay to ship it back to sw.

My finish is worn there too.  There is no way to stop it.  Unless the aluminum frame is chipping, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well it is on the frame yes, but it's just the black finish that chipped off not he aluminum itself. It's basically the outer most edge of the round part just ahead of the cylinder release.

You should not have to pay to ship it back to S&W. call them and explain the issue. I'm sure they will accomidate you.

I wouldn't worry about it.  If you carry the 442 everywhere like it's designed for, it's gonna get a lot more wear in other places too.  I just look at it as honest wear.  Let's face it, probably hundreds of thousands of these airweight J frames have been made.  All but a very few rare models are going to have any significant collector value to them.  Carry it, shoot it, clean and lube it, and enjoy it, don't fret the finish.

JMHO.

That's what I plan to do.  It will not be a safe queen. I'm just concerned about rust. Is the bare metal in that spot going to give me problems. I have some alumablack should I hit it with that.

you shouldn't consider rust to be a factor as the aluminum will not rust...
