| Hey guys I want your personal experiences with the bretta 92FS. Out where I live Butler county Ohio. They (sherrifes office) carry the beretta 92FS in 40cal. They all HATE it with the passion (don't really know why). I myself used to own one in 40 cal (sold it to go to school). I never had a problem with mine and was looking to get one in 9mm. Any thoughs on this. Any and all comments welcome. Thanks guys. |
| I've got a 92FS 9mm and it's a good gun. Would I want to carry it on my hip every day? No way. Would I trust that gun with my life? You bet. My biggest beefs with the gun are the weight, and the simple fact that the lefty safety lever isn't recessed like the righty one pisses me off to no end. I wouldn't buy another 92/96, but I'd certainly take one if it were given to me. |
I always just remove the lefty safety anyway. |

I like my 92fs (9mm) very much. I bought it used and the trigger is so smooth. I put a DAO trigger spring in it and it lowered the trigger pull. Since the pistol is very heavy and has a low bore axis, split times can be very short. It is so nice to shoot, I use it to teach friends to shoot. |

I spent sometime as a LEO SWAT for the county SO. I was issued a Glock 21 before I went to the academy.Could not stand it personally.Still do not like Glocks today and believe me Ive tried a few.So I elected to carry my S&W 586 as my intitial service weapon.Right before entering the academy I purchased a 92FS and a security holster on my own dime.I did not have time to even test fire the 92FS before I went to the academy.Took it out of the box during academy weapons training and treated it like crap.Never a failure then or now and that includes the crap academy ammo.Shot top of the class too.It was an immediate love affair for me.Carried it every day, trained with it,attended a couple SWAT schools and subgun schools and never a hicup. Still shooting the crap out of it today 13 years later.Only thing it has needed was a recoil spring every once in awhile and new magazine followers.Slide catch ate through the factory aluminum followers rather fast. The new polymer followers last forever it seems. So what do I feel about the 92FS as an ex-LEO and SWAT officer? I love the freakin thing. I do not think its too large, too heavy and have no complaints of the controls. It works all the time and every time. Would I depend my life on the 92? Thats an absolute yes and I have. In fact if I had to grab any one pistol I have in the locker in time of need its going to be my old, worn and beat up 92FS.Its also my CCW weapon. A large majority of LEO's cant shoot for crap either. If you do not think so attend a weapons training class or your local range during qualification. Also notice that there is usually an old patrol unit used for night quals...reason why is there is always some knuckle head that creases or punches holes in the hood or fender with a few rounds. Also I believe Glock holds the record for the most AD's from LEO's.Or at least the most butt damage. ![]() So take what they say lightly on several points and thats coming from someone who spent time in the LEO ranks and Im proud I did. Oh yeah not all LEO's support weapons bans and restrictive gun laws.Mainly the only LEO's you see spouting off that crap is the higher ups and elected officials trying to get points for doing so.The average LEO on the street is a gun enthusiast for the most part(those that are not are also usually the poor marksmen and hood killers),that the crap laws effect just as they do anybody. Also most LEO's know that there are weapons of all sorts out there to encounter and its just part of the job.If they are frightened and need stronger laws to limit guns/weapons to the citizens I say they need to look for a new job immediately.I had more fear of catching something from some POS during a fight than getting shot. While they are banning stuff, they need to limit knives, axe's,ball bats, hockey sticks, bottles and the most dangerous weapon of all AUTOMOBILES to make the job easier/safer. Personally I was not intimidated one bit.Ive been shot and stabbed and can say I'd actually rather go up against someone armed with a gun than a knife or axe.Getting stabbed happens fast and is accurate and there aint much you can do.It gets personal. |

It's rare indeed I read a large post and agree with everything in it. Blankwaffe98 is on the money from start to finish. I have owned a 92FS INOX 9mm purchased new for about 5 or 6 years. Never so much as one hiccup. Local LE friends (most carry Glocks) appreciate it as well. Of course, as mentioned, my LE friends are on the beat, not buckin' for office. If I could only have one I would have one hell of a tough time deciding. I own Sig & HK as well. Assuming more than one pistol will follow you home throughout your life, I say buy it, enjoy it, and never look back. GoGo |

I bought my 92FS in 1988 and I have NEVER had a malfunction with it. Its accurate and dependable. Bought a Glock 21 and sold it 6 months later. It was the biggest piece of crap I ever shot. Do I love my Beretta.....YES!hippie.gif |

Regarding Blankwaffe98's mentioning the record for most AD's attributed to Glocks, does anyone recognize this now-famous quote? "I am the only one in this room PROFESSIONAL enough to carry a .40!" Wasn't that a Glock? I have had my Bruniton 92 for about 20 years. I have had an Inox 92 for more than 10 years. I have never had any trouble with either. And I have never babied them. here |

I love my 92fs Brig. It's my favorite pistola! Of course when I bought it, I only tested (rented) about 7 or so to see which one fit me best. I was shocked when it was the one that said 'buy me' FYI, I tested the cz75, glock 19, sig 226, ruger p-85 (my own), some pos s+w 9, and one or two forgettable others. Went with the beretta, and not looking back. TXL |
| I love my M9 but I really don't like the 96 in .40...11 shots is dumb when you could have 15 of a Glock. When you get into the top tier handguns its really personal preference. The Sig,USP,Glock and Beretta are all top notch. Some complaints with the beretta are the wierd up/fire down/safe and the trigger. The trigger on the Beretta is competitive with all the other wondernines and it doesn't confront me. I really don't like the 96...its a good gun, I just think there are better 40s to be had, not as in quality or reliability...but ergonomics/capacity. Remember, the Beretta and the Sig are the only ones that were able to survive the brutality of the govt tests....There is a reason why those two guns are issued by many militarires. Between the 226 and the M9? Dealers choice? Which do you like? Reliability is superb on both*both had teething problems when first issued, which have since been eliminated* Considering how widespread the deployment of the M9 and even the 96 is, Id say the problem is with the Butler County Sheriffs...their requirements may not be met with the gun, which isnt a reflection on the weapon but the people who issued it. |
| My 92 is smooth, accurate, and reliable. It is large and that is one of the reasons I like it because I hate mini pistols. Mid sized like the Glock 19 I like but you can have the minis. I also think that the idiot that shot himself with the Glock would have shot himself with any thing because he is an idiot. I would not hesitate to buy a 92 but if I had it to do over again I would look hard at the vertec but I do like the grip on the 92 as well as all the parts you can get for it. As far as a particular police department not liking it who cares. Some say they do not like Glocks others say they do not like 1911s and I have seen some choose to carry Sigmas so am I going out and buying a Sigma? NO. |
|
I like my 92FS so much I just bought an 8040 Cougar also! As a 1911 guy, the Berettas always seem to fit my hand the best. Berettas will outlive most average shooters. Control locations are instinctive and greatly reduce the chance of AD. What's not to like. DC "I don't know the key to success. But the key to failure trying to please everybody." Bill Cosby |
Tex, ain't it great when a firearm sings to you? I used to hunt pheasant out of Muleshoe and I swapped off my Beretta 686 with a guy who had a Model 21 (I grew up shooting an old LC Smith). That 21 pointed at birds for me like a magnet on steel. Only bad thing is when you switch back and what was till then a good fit now feels like a log! |
Funny you should say that, whenever my mom doesn't go pheasant hunting with us I'll snag her 686. For me it's just got the perfect balance. |
+1 A cop is the LAST person I'd take gun advice from, generally speaking. I bad mouthed Beretta's for years & bought a used 92FS & just fell in love with it! They are damn fine guns & have proven to be so time & time again. My .o2 |

Take what you hear these officers say with a large grain of salt. Cops are never really happy unless they can bitch about something! Part of what you have heard may be based on the fact that the Ohio State police switched from their Beretta 96's to Sig 226's in .40 a couple of years ago. OSP stated they had reliability issues with the Berettas, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the new Director mostly wanted to get some new equipment out in "his" name...a common practice when heads of agencies change. Florida Highway Patrol uses the 96 and has had zero problems with them as far as I know. One of my next purchases is most likely going to be either a 92 Elite II or a 92 Vertec. |
Exactly, The local town Police and the Sheriffs Dept. have gone thru Beretta, Sig, Glock, S&W and are now carrying Glocks and they are still not happy. Reasons vary from reliability, training and size and carry issues. Some are valid, some I believe are just excuses. Most loved the SS Smiths but said how heavy the Sig and Berettas were But I have also seen people spend $500 on a handgun and want ammo and a holster for $10 ![]() Enjoy, |

Most Administrators just can't get it through their heads that ONE gun will not fit all. Fortunetly I worked for a department that posted an APPROVED list and allowed you to carry anything on the list as long as you qualifyed with it. while the 92 is a great gun it is way to LARGE for most peoples hands. |
I hear ya! I got a 92F, 92FS, 96F centurian, and a 96F stainless! And their baby brother, the 84F |
|
| i would highly recommend the beretta 92 fs...i bought one when i turned 21 (over 4 years ago), and have subjected it to a lot of abuse and about every different type of ammo there is-and it has NEVER failed to feed, fire, or extract. my brother loved mine so much that he bought one, and he's had no problems, either. |
|
I have owned a 92FS that I bought brand new when I was 21 and have owned and fired over the past 7 years. The only problem I have had is the slide catch/release chewing up the alumniun followers. I'll probably get bashed for this but I like it better than my 1911 as far as fitting my handhasing, On a side note can someone explain the hype of the .357 Sig to me. A 9mm, .380 and a .357 are all .355 in diameter pretty much the same caliber. I know terminal balistics are different. |
|
Put a 357 Sig case next to a 9mm case, you'll see the 357 Sig case is bigger, holds more powder, which means more power. Interesting Sig went with a .357 projectile rather than a 9mm projectile though, the .357 is just a couple thousandth's bigger in diameter. Maybe it was a marketing ploy to get Revolver People to switch to semi auto's? "357 Sig" sounds more intimidating than "9mm Sig" cause every one knows 9mms are wimpier than 357 magnums |
I agree 100% with you. I have a 226 in .357- I love it. Feels a LOT worse in my hand (which is not the largest), but damn I've said it before and I'll say it again- I can't miss with the darn thing. For some reason the geometry of the thing covers my poor ability. Not to veer off from the FS, I just had to shoot it more to become proficient and I don't know why. Chickenbone VooDoo all in my head I'm sure. What's the deal with the rumors of bad reloads and suspect factory with the .357 I read somewhere else here? I've never had a problem with my 226 ammo. Makes a nice bang and fireball for the range drones. |
| I love my 92 FS SS Vertec. It feels great for my smaller hands. Accurate as hell, I found good 20rd mags from Berette and a Beretta owned company that work well for me. Being a lefty, I like the left side safety, but either way it does not seem overly heavy to me or bulky. Seems to have right amount of extras without going overboard. Easy to clean, take apart, and reassemble without any tools. |

I would have liked my LE agency to have gone Beretta....I own six of them (92G Vertec, 92FC, 92 FC Type M, 92D Centurion with magazine disconnect, Mini Cougar 8045D and Cougar 8000L). They are great guns. My first carry gun was the 92FC which I preferred to carry off-duty over my Sig P228...not to take anything away from the Sig though...it's a first rate gun. I liked my Beretta a bit more because it fit my hand better. My current duty pistol is a P229 in .40 S&W....my new off-duty carry guns are either a Steyr S40, Kimber Combat Carry .45 ACP or the Cougar 8000L (the one I carry depends on the mood I'm in). My night stand home defense gun is the 92G Vertec which is a delight to shoot and just hold thanks to the slim (compared to non-Vertec Berettas) grips. |
i carried a 92fs for 10 years on a daily basis and think it is a great gun. i dont understand the negative outlook on the beretta. i am in warren county ohio...hi neighbor.... |
