How light of a reduced power recoil spring can I use in my 92 without worrying about additional battering and premature wear to the firearm. I know it has a 13lbs factory spring and I can get a Wolff spring anywhere from 9lbs to 20lbs. Please keep in mind that I use this gun for IPSC production shooting and it is not intended as my defensive pistol. I also don't shoot any high pressure rounds thru it. I mostly stick to WWB 115gr and every now and then use WWB 124gr. Thanks for the help. I'm also open to any suggestions. I also plan on putting a reduced power hammer spring in to decrease the weight of that awful first shot DA pull. |
What I'm trying to accomplish is limiting the amount of muzzle dive from the force of the slide returning to battery. A lighter spring will effectively do this. My concern is how much accelerated wear, if any, will this cause to my pistol and how light can I go? |
Yes, it WILL cause extra wear as the frame is alloy, not steel & it will easily crack with battering from the slide. As for the slide "nose diving", I have yet to experience this with my 92. Personally, I'd leave the factory spring alone & do a bit more practicing. Unless of course, you have the extra $$$ to burn on buying a new 92FS when yours goes tits up? ![]() My .o2 |

I wouldn't go much lighter than a single lb or two lighter than stock, imo. not w/ factory ammo, if you want your gun to last. especially if you're lightening the mainspring, too. Mine's probably 12lb now or less (a REAL worn 13 lber), annd it beats the frame pretty good.... sometimes it's hard to get the guide rod in/out as the metal on the frame where the slide hits it get a little deformed from being beaten into. Granted this gun has approx 65 or 70 thou rounds through it, too. When I get my reloader up and running and am loading 9 to just make PF, I'm going to experiment with going lighter still, maybe to the 10lb range. I've played w/ lots of different weight springs, and have found the lighter springs do seem to make for a 'flatter' recoil. Can run .14 to .13 splits on factory 9mm loads and still be tracking the front sight (and can get as low as .10s/,11, but start losing the FS and move my focus to the target much under .14s). rvb |

00, Here is some good reading on running different spring rates. Many points of view from pro, to con, to it doesn't matter. Note many of the guns in discussion are high-end open guns like STI, etc., not run-o-the-mill Berettas. www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?s=&act=ST&f=42&t=5005 |
