What is the military spec M9 model? Im looking to buy one and i want as close to mil-spec as i can get?

There is only one version of the true civilian M9 that you can buy. It has M9 markings...

There IS an M9A1 - which is a railed 92 essentially - the marines apparently have some...

And then there are various 92 variants for sale as well

The difference between a mil issue M9 and a civilian 92FS is the markings on the slide.

Search for the Beretta M9 Commercial. From the Beretta website: "The commercial M9 pistol is the closest replica to the military M9 that a civilian may legally
own."

When you get one, scrub the hell out of it with steel wool to simulate wear then drop it a few times so it will be more like the issue ones.

The sights are diffferent between the 92FS IIRC.

This was 1998, but I did buy an "M9 special edition) that was the same as an M9... The serial number was in a different series from a Mil issue, but otherwise the same.

Sights can be either bar dot or 3 dot on the military M9. PS magazine addressed this a few years ago.

Okay, so the "M9" and 92 are the same thing with different markings.

Can anybody spot any significant differences in a 92 made in the US versus a 92 made in Italy?

- Roll pin used on italian models - for the lanyard loop pin. USA made ones have a different pin that doesn't require a punch and hammer to remove it.

- The barrel has a slight crown on Italian models compared to USA models - with the way they put the bruniton on the barrel...

Only 2 differences really....

Some say the finish is nicer on italian ones. Lately, at the Beretta Forum, people have said that the finish on the USA made ones are nicer than italian ones.
