I have an older 226 made in W. Germany and it has developed some "looseness" in the slide from side to side. When the mag is empty w/ one round in the pipe the slide will rattle a bit when you shake the weapon. This rattle goes away when there are rounds in the mag.

What gives?

For whatever reason Sig slide to frame fit tends to be a bit loose anyway.

The loaded magazine is pressing the top round against the bottom of the closed slide pretty firmly. This pressure probably conceals any looseness.

I agree.  It's completely normal.  It helps the weapon to be extremely reliable in bad conditions.  My 2002 P226-9mm does the exact same thing.

As did mine when I had it.

The bbl to slide fit seems to be much more important to accuracy.  Accuracy gained from a vault tight slide to frame doesn't seem worth the reliability risk.  I think SIG designed them with the perfect mix.  As long as your sights are moving with the same relationship to the bbl, who cares about a little slide slop?  It insures a few specs of sand in the grooves won't shut you down.

My 229, 226, 220 is the same way.  BTW the 229 had its's 14,000 th round through it now with no problems.  Just checked over by a q'd armorer.  Nothing beats a Sig!

My P226 does the same.  Still a tack driver and functions flawless.

Slide rattle seems to be disconcerting to a lot of people.

Its perfectly normal in ANY handgun built to run reliably in a harsh environment.
