I've a P229 w/std blk plastic grips.  Are the wood grips from a P229 Elite or Equinox interchangeable with the std plastic grips?  Also, any ideas where I can find nice wooden grips for a P220 Compact?

Yes you can put them on any P229 the only thing is you'll need to swap the screws also
the Woods have longer screws but can't be used with the plastics...

If you haven't already, definitely handle one of the Sigs with wooden grips before you replace the ones on your 229. They are very thick, which may be what you are looking for, or may make shooting a huge pain.

My favorite are still the Hogue rubber grip panels, not the wraparound grips with the finger grooves. They are too thick, just the grip panels.

I've not yet handled the 229 w/wood grips so I'll certainly do that.  I really appreciate the looks of the wood (thus the reason I'm asking to begin with), but certainly not to the detriment of being able to deploy the weapon effectively.  I've been a longtime affecionado of 1911 and just recently made the leap into DA/SA world.  Typically, changing the grips on a 1911 isn't a show-stopper.  Thanks for the tip.

I usually shoot a Kimber GMII and made the switch to a 229R Elite in 40 to carry last year.
Wood grips are wider but I do love them. Damn Sig is really accurate too for a 3.9 inch barrel

You bet!   I've a P220 Compact that'll shoot 2-3" grps at 25 yds till the cows come home.   Only limitation is me.
