Anyone have any ideas? I just bought a used P239 as a gift for my fiancee...Not going to give it to her until I can get this straightened out.

Shoots beautifully, but slide only locks back on an empty mag 10-20% of the time. At first I thought it was my grip hitting the slide release. Then I tried locking the slide back on an empty mag by hand cycling the slide and it won't lock back. Would replacing the slide catch spring fix this? Or hopefully some other simple task that I or a local gunsmith can do? Because other than this issue the gun functions flawlessly, very accurate, great trigger pull. Oh and it did this with 3 different factory mags.

Thanks guys.

That's pretty odd. I would suspect that maybe someone has messed with the slide catch and may not have replaced the spring correctly. I don't see three magazines all having spring issues at once. You might, however, check to be sure some goofus has not cleaned the mags and reinserted the springs backwards, (low end towards front of mag) which will definitely cause what you are experiencing.

Thanks. I also considered that maybe it was gunked up from disuse and cleaned the area around the slide catch. Seems to be functioning a little better now but still not consistently. Will have to check the mags again.

I'd be willing to bet that is why the original owner got rid of it. They probibly sent it back to Sig several times and it was never fixed properly. That my firend is the fantastic quality of Sig today! Good luck and I hope you get it running right. If it was my wife, I'd ditch the POS for a Glock or Smith and Wesson to protect her with.

I'd like to think not. I know the owner, we work at neighboring agencies. He is selling most of his centerfires due to hand injury.  I hope he would've mentioned that.

I had the exact same problem when I started shooting my P239.  It wasn't the magazines, it was my thumbs.  Make sure your thumbs, both of them, are not resting on the slide release.

Maybe not then. I sent back 4 problematic Sigs and not one came back running properly. New Sig's suck s*** and their service does too. I'm sorry to say it since I was a huge Sig fan for 20 years. They have sooooo many quality problems now........sad.

This is my bet too. Check your grip.

Reread his post. It does not lock back when he pulls the slide back by hand to lock it open.

There is ~8 page thread on the SigForum.com site about this issue.

BTW, my P-239/.40 does the same thing, and my thumb is not touching the slide release.

Good luck.

I too had this problem with one I got in 2003.  In the first 250 rounds it happened more than 50% of the time.  After sending it back to Sig, and before that having them send me a replacement spring it was determined nothing was wrong.  So rather then give up on it, I merely shot it some more.  Amazing once I cleared the 400 round count it stopped happening.  The top of the slide stop was worn down at that point.  Not sure what really was causing it, but the one I bought in early 1998 after a deployment never had these issues.  Too it was supposed I was hitting the slide stop, but as it happened only on the 2003 one and not the 1998 one, I knew it wasn't me.  Regardless it works properly now, even if it does have slide rattle... unlike the 1998 version.

I suppose I should have just shot it more initially, but having only had experience with Sig in the 90's, I was sure something was up with this particular pistol.

You could try to "shoot it out", worked for me.

Good luck.

I wish I could get my thumb off of the slide stop on this great little pistol. My high thumbs hold always holds down the slide stop on the P239.

I have the opposite problem. The slide catch/release is ridiculously tight. Resting my thumbs on it does nothing. I have to summon the strength of a giant to push it in.
