I am law enforcement currently working in a dept. that carries Glock 22 and have a Glock 27 as back up. I have possibility of going to a different dept. that carries Sig P229 in .40 cal. Should I get hired there, I am thinking of getting a Sig P239 for a back up to replace the Glock 27 I have now. I little experience with Sigs, but my thinking is that it would be better to have same trigger/ operation for both main service weapon and back up gun, akin to the Glock 22/27 combo. Anyone with any input? How does a Sig P239 (in .40 cal.) compare to a Glock 27? Is my thinking way off track? Either way, guess I am just stretching for a lame excuse to get me a new gun!!!

The P239 is an excellent pistol, but I don't know how well it will work for your needs. For being a compact pistol, it is rather bulky and heavy. I don't know how you currently carry your G27, but just be aware that the SIG P239 is going to be quite different. The P239 has 7rd single stack mags. You won't be able to use to your P229 mags in it (like the G22 and G27 can). I like the idea that you want to stick with a single platform for your carry and BUG. I'm just afraid that the P239 won't provide you with any additional benefits over the G27. Don't get me wrong, I love my P239! I shoot it as well as a fullsize SIG. The trigger is great and with some Hogue wraparound grips it feels like it is a part of your hand. Shooting .40S&W rounds out of a P239 is not bad. Follow up shots may be slightly slower than fullsize, but nothing to really worry about. I just feel that it is better suited as an off-duty carry pistol rather than a back-up. Then again, it would be a great excuse to buy a new pistol!  Good luck with your decision! |

I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a P239 for years, but I can’t convince myself to do it. Each time I pick one up, I’m struck on how it’s almost as big and heavy as my 9MM P228, which carries a lot more rounds (in addition to having a nicer grip). I’ve always suspected that the P239 is really intended as a regular duty pistol for females with really small hands (or bureaucrats who drive a desk all day). And it’s ideal for that purpose. Frankly, I don’t think the operation of the Glock and SIG are so dramatically different to justify getting a P239 - esp. if you’re going to a DAK SIG. Granted, if it’s a DA/SA SIG, you’d better not forget to decock it before holstering! |
That was kinda my point. I have been training/ using Glocks for over 10 years and the de-cocking thing is something I am not used to. I sure with repeated traing etc. I will get the hang of it but it'll be a minor change. I never handled a P239 and from what I am reading the has some heft and size that I did not expect. I imagined the P239 as the size of a Kahr or something similar...... |

I've got a 239 in .40 and love it. Much less recoil than you'd think and follow up shots are fast. My friend uses a 239 in .357 as a BUG/Off duty gun. He carries it in an ankle holster (not sure which one). He says that you get used to it after a while and is not uncomfortable to carry that way. |
