My friend has a p229. he wants to refinish it with norells. He cant get the pin on the slide out. (refered to as pins 7&8 in the armorers manual). He has hit it with a punch and it wount budge at all. Hi is afraid to continue because it will start mushrooming. Please help!

turn the take down lever 180 degrees from where it would be when the pistol is ready to fire. You should be able to slide it out of the frame at that point. The pin has a small slot cut in it that keeps it from falling out.

That pin is pressed in at the factory with a hydrolic press.
A punch will mushroom it then the fun begins.

Go to the SIG forum and they can help you some.

I think I've read about using a fixture with a press to remove the pin from the stainless slide.

The 229 has a stainless slide.

I assume you are referring to the firing pin retaining pin. You need  a cup tip punch to remove this. You can buy them through Brownells ir Sigarms. One you remove it you will need to install a new one. I dont know if Sigarms uses a hydraulic press to install this pin. You certainly dont need one to remove the pin. The pins go in from right. Remove them from left to right.
