OK, got a P229 in .40 and love it.

But I think I'm asking too much of it.

I like the 10 round capacity for CCW.

But here's what I'm thinking about doing...

I'd like to get a .40 228 for a carry gun (lighter than even the 239, which only allows 7+1, I beleive) ...

....and then also get a 226 in 40S&W for my "combat" handgun.

Whadda ya think????

Is the 228 any good? Saw one at a gun show, and it was real light.

The P228 is a fine pistol, unfortunately it doesn't come in .40S&W.  This is why they made the P229; same size as the 228, with a stainless slide to tolerate the higher pressures associated with the .40 round.  The 228 comes only with the stamped/folded steel slide, and only comes in 9mm.  For a 9mm, it seems to be the perfect handgun--13 round mags, lighter than the 229, balances well.

Now, the 226 in .40 would be a great combat pistol.  This too, was originally intended for the 9mm round, however the newer versions with the stainless slide are a bit top-heavy by comparison.

For a carry SIG in a more potent cartridge, you cannot go wrong with the P239 in 40 or 357SIG.

Ditto what agony said. 228's are only available in 9mm. I have had two .40 P226's. Great guns. The 239 in .40 is a good shooter as well.

Just keep the 229 and use 226 .40 preban mags in it. They stick out a little but they work and they're cheaper than preban 229 mags.

I just bought my 229 and love it.

Hmm...just where are you finding pre-ban .40 P226 mags and how much are they going for?  You do mean .40 and not 9mm, right?

For those of you who dont already know. You can use preban 9mm 226 magazines in a .40/.357 229 or 226 and get 12 rounds of .40/.357 into them. You can also use preban 9mm P228/P229 mags in a .40/.357 P229 and also will hold 12 rounds of .40/357

I've tried it with the P228/P229 9mm hicaps in a .40 P229 with mixed results.  The .40s just don't stack right and there were jams.  The reason for this is the P229 .40 mag IS a different body than the 9mm.  The mag body itself is shaped different.  This allows the wider cartridge to stack correctly and channel into the single feed postion.  In the 9mm, once in a while, the larger 40 cases would get hung up inside the mag body itself.  Sometimes it worked fine, but often it didn't.  Not the kind of thing I'll trust my life to.

Plenty of other designs allow this, but I'd check it first before sinking alot of money into a bunch of pre-ban P228 mags and find out it won't work in your P229.  I didn't in mine (though I have a P228, so hi-caps weren't a waste).

I'd still like to find out where Gabriel is getting .40 pre-ban mags for a P226.
