I just purchased my first handgun and got a sig226 in .40. I have shot some other handguns before and this one seems a bit inaccurate. I was shooting at around 10 yards. I shot 250 rounds of various kinds of ammunition- nothing so cheap that i would consider the ammo was the cause of the inaccuracy. Is it normal to have groups around 2 feet in diameter at that range? that seems a bit poor to me but im somewhat new to the handgun thing. im not a great shot with rifles or anything but i can hit a target 2 feet in diameter at like 500 yards with some of my ar's. kindof like comparing apples to oranges but you see can see what im saying. so is that normal grouping at all at 10 yards?

take a lesson, read up on proper pistol shooting technique, you will be shocked what an improper grip, trigger pull, stance, etc. can do to your shooting. Based on the fact that from what you said it is randomly dispersed, i would say its probably the shooter, not the gun. if it was the gun it would be consistantly inaccurate not randomly inaccurate. Shooting a pistol is a very difficult thing to learn, it took me months and thousands of rounds of trial and error before i was able to find what works for me. but bottom line, figure out a proper grip, trigger finger placement, and stance and i guarantee you will like the results. pistol shooting is not like rifle shooting, if you line up the sights that doesn't always mean that your automatically going to shoot accuratly. try tightening up your grip, and make sure you are pulling the trigger with the first knuckle of your finger. theres a lot more to it, but that would take a post way to long for me to write. I'm gonna try to dig up a good video for you.

I was shooting at around 10 yards.

It is not the gun.
My Sig .40 has givin me several groups under 4" at 25 yards.
I would have to assume you are flinching.
Shooting an AR is one of the easier things you can do in the gun world. Shooting a handgun accurately is one of the hardest.
When I was in the Navy I could not miss with the M14 (.308), but I was so bad with a 1911 they had to send me to remedial pistol class just to get me to qualify so I could stand watch.
When I got out I was determined to master the pistol. It only took 15 years.

It's the way you pull the trigger and also your grip. Try to adjust it while shooting and you will see a difference. Plus the trigger depends on where you pull it back so you just gotta play along and see wher eyour sweet spot is. I had trouble with my P228 9mm when I first bought it cause all my guns were H&K. Took a while but finally found my sweet spot. Just practice some more and dont give up on your gun. Get some snap caps to practice with too.

My Sig P229 (with over 13k rounds through it) is still a tack driver! A wise shooter once told me that 99% of the time the shooter is at fault.....If you're groups are spread out all over the place, and in no discernable pattern, it's quite possibly you rather than the weapon. That said be sure you have the fundamentals down first:

Proper grip
Smooth, steady trigger pull (very important!)
Sight alignment
Sight picture
etc.

Also, try having somebody else shoot your Sig and see what results they achieve.....Enjoy your Sig, it's a great weapon!

Nothing that some trigger time won't cure.

Most p226 are super accurate right out of the box. Good triggers seem to be hit or miss though.
