I recently picked up a 226 that has a U prefix serial number.
Is there anything special about it other than it's old and it doesn't take current grip screws?

thx

I think that's about it.  I bought one from CDNN a couple of years ago.  Still an awesome gun and mine was made in 1988.  It is currently getting an overhaul at sig right now.

My Blackwater has a U prefix, what does that mean, I don't think it is old. I bought it new about 6months ago.

I don't believe there is any rarity, or collectability, to a U prefix pistol.

Both of my Blackwaters have U serial numbers and they were purchased in the last 3 months.

I believe the U series had their frames made in Germany and the UU's had theirs made in the USA.

From the stampings on the frame J6, mine was made in 86 I think. It's in great shape and the breech face is still black.
I was just wondering because the current grip screws won't fit, I had to order U serial grip screws.
BTW the serial starts out as U 14X XXX

thanks guys.

Look again.  Look under the slide  at the very end.  You'll see two proof marks, and the a two letter code.  Your "J6", but its probably JG.  JG is 86, btw

I read somewhere the single U means it was made in Germany, unlike the UU serial numbered guns are made in the US. Don't know how true that is.

All SIG P226 have the U or UU 1st letter serial #
