I've had a P220 for a few years but never really considered myself a sig fan so I didnt follow any of their pistols too much. I've always thought the P226 was a 9mm, the 229 a .40 and so on. I looked at the website and damn if they dont have .40 P226s and 9mm 229s and so on. Was it always like this or did they just decide to screw with my head? What's the major difference between the 226 and 229 if not caliber? Hell same question for most of the models I guess. Not really in the market for any more sigs but just curious. |

220 - Original full size single stack. Was originally made in 9mm, 45 is now the "standard" 225 - Compact single stack, developed for (then) West German police trials. As far as I recall only ever offered in 9mm and now no longer made. Fairly scarce on this side of the pond. 226 - Full size double stack. Originally in 9mm, now 357 SIG and 40 S & W as well. 228 - Compact double stack. I've only ever seen it in 9mm. No longer imported. 229 - Improved 228. Compact double stack but with machined stainless steel slide instead of the stamped/welded slides of the earlier series. Designed for the 40 S & W, the thought being the higher pressures of the 40 may not be condusive to the stamped slide. Availible in 9mm. 357 SIG, and 40 S & W. Probably the most common version in today's market. |
