| After many years of taking my 229 apart I have finally stripped the screw holes on my aluminum receiver. I am looking for ways to fix this. One way, I was thinking was to fill it in with JB weld and re tap. The other was to go to a larger screw. Do you guys have any suggestions? Also if I go to a larger screw, what size? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks |

Sorry it took so long to see this thread.
I had the same thing happen to my P229. The original thread size is M4. the thickness of the metal at the grip screw hole is 2mm. I bought a 2mm thick piece of aluminum and drilled and tapped several holes in it and then stripped them out by over torquing them. I then tried several different methods to fix them. I tried helicoils, aluminum putty, and even some epoxy based repairs. Nothing held up. I ended up tapping the hole to M5 and used a P220 grip screw in it. The P220 grip screw is much longer than a P229 grip screw so I had to shorten it. I did this by putting a washer on it and screwing it into the 2mm thick aluminum piece I had and ground off the excess from the other side. Worked like a champ and the screw head looks just like the others. Now I am real careful not to cross the threads or over torque the screws in any of my SIGs. |
