I put Scherer +2 bases on both my G20 and G21 mags using the stock springs and they have been excellent for a number of years.  Two weeks ago I decided to haul out the old G20/21L after almost a year of concentrating on other firearms.  So I load up the 10mm and start to have feeding problems. Tried my other mags and the same thing.

Not Happy

At home I took them apart to see if I could find the issue and sure enough, the mag springs were worn out.  In fairness, the stock springs were on the short side from the beginning but they did work.  So, I ordered 10ea Arredondo + 10 mag springs (5ea 10mm and 5ea 45acp mags) from the good gents at Lone Wolf.

They came promptly and I installed them in my mags.  Off to the range yesterday with every mag loaded up for function testing and as expected, they performed flawlessly.  The longer, heavier gauge spring pushes up the follower just a bit higher in the mag body which aids in chambering.

You see with the shorter stock springs, when my chambers got a bit of carbon after 100 or so rounds, I'd occasionally have have a round not fully chamber and I'd have to tap the rear of the slide.  I attributed those to the tight match chambers and would carry a bore mop to swab them out at the range.  One or two passes with the mop and we were back up running so no big thing.

Two hundred rounds of each caliber and no such issues now!

Reminder to self.  Be sure and keep up with your mag maintenance.  Mag issues are the number one cause of feeding problems in auto pistols.

Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the tip!

I went ahead and painstakingly cleaned the 15 mags I have for my 23. Since I don't care about reselling the mags ever, I took a sharp razor blade and slightly trimmed those two side tabs. Makes diassembling mag super quick, but the mag is still very secure. Still takes a lot of effort to crack em open, but nothing like before.

Also, I took a very fine file and just slightly deburred the followers that had some slight burs on them.

Good reminder, COSteve.

Mags are an important part of the overall weapon system.
