About 12 years ago when I took my first LE job I was issued a 2nd generation 19.  Didn't like it much...somethng about the grip didn't fit my large but skinny hands...my scores were always so-so...left the 19 behind when I went to a new job.

At about the same time I got my first LE job I also bought a 2nd generation 22 for personal use becasue that's what I knew and the price from a friend was right.  Didn't like it much either...same issues as the 19...eventually sold it...

Then I drank the 1911 Cool-aid and bought a Kimber Stainless Custom II...liked it much better...still use it as my primary personal use/home-defense sidearm...

Last week my new GF's co-worker was attacked leaving her work.  GF was freaked out and asked me about helping her buy a pistol.  Since she's new to firearms I steered her toward Glock for the reliability, safety and simplicity.  We rented a 19 at the local range for her to try since that was the model that felt best to her at the counter and just for grins I also rented a 21.  I was mostly curious to see if the 3rd generation was a significant improvement over the 2nd and to compare it to my 1911.

Needless to say I'm impressed.  Both the 3rd generation 19 and 21 felt and shot much better that I remember of the 2nd generation.  My 1911's days are numbered.  I just need to decide between the 19 and the 21SF.  I see the 19 being more versitile in terms of carry/concealment but I'm am pretty hooked on .45 ACP...

Yea I know...I should get both....

If I could only have one I would get the 19,  I have a 17,19,26 and I CCW the 19 daily, am fixing to buy a 21SF and a 30SF to CCW when I feel like a bigger caliber.  The 19 will always be my favorite pistol though. Besides you can always get the one you dont choose later on down the road.

Glock 19 FTW

I've tried a lot of guns, and by tried I don't mean tried a friends.

I bought lots of different guns, searching for the [big echo voice]  "Ultimate Hand guuuuun" [/big echo voice]

and while I liked most of them, the glock seems to be the one I keep comming back to.

and to be honest I don't like the way glocks look, in fact it's like looking at an ugly cousin.

but the simplicity of the design, the minimal parts, it's high reliability, and cheap mags and user friendly parts replacement I just keep coming back to Glock. which is a beauty in and of itself.

so now I own 2 G19's, a G26 and a G21sf.

damn they're block-y, uninteresting, non sexy, pieces of plastic and square steel, but damn if i don't trust my life to that ugly thing. I shoot it well, and it goes bang every time.

what else do you need in a defensive side arm?

so now I target shoot with my beautiful 1911, I train to fight with my Glocks.

so don't feel bad coming back to Glocks, just accept them for what they are and train (and your GF too) and know as far as defensive handguns go they get top marks from many, many people.

From what you explained to me I think the G21SF would be perfect for you.  I have huge hands and sometimes my G32 and G27 are to small for me.  My G21SF fits me perfectly.  Just one piece of advice do not get it with the picatinny rail unless you want to have a hard time finding holsters they exist but are hard to find good ones.

yeah, you know what im going to say.

as a note though, not all glock models are equal.  the g17 and g19 are generally regarded as the best glocks while other models, the 40S&Ws and the g21 are often cited as amongst the worst glocks (still good guns, but not as good... reliability issues).

do a thread search here to see what i mean.

Get her the G19 and you get the G21. That way you can feed you need for the G19 by shooting hers and you'll still have the G21. My buddy has a G19 and I love they way it shoots/feels. I also love how my G22 shoots/feels oh and my G30....See the trend I understand your predicament (sp?) though.

I love my Glocks! You just can't beat a Glock in simplicity of use, cheap parts, and easy to work on. I have a 22 and a 27 that I carry daily, but I have also been looking at the 17, because I can still use my 22 holsters for it, or the 19. I think one of those will be my Christmas present to myself.

I just parted with my 1911 (which I shot for 20+ years) in exchange for a 21SF and couldn't be happier.  I'm a lifelong fan of .45 ACP - bigger bullets make bigger holes, more or less - and love the quality, fit and accuracy of the 21SF.  I'm not a small guy - 6'1" and 210 - and the gun fits my hand very well.  +1 on skipping the picatinny rails.

G19 FTW!

You should both get G19's so mags, etc. are interchangeable.

Yeah...you should get both!  I carried a 19 on duty and loved it.  One of the best combat 9mm's ever made.  I bought a G-21SF and I'm in love with that too.  It's going to be a toss up on what I want to carry, A G-22 RTF2 or a G-21 SF.  Decisions, Decisions.
