If you want a really durable coating, no paint or other applied surface will last for as long or be as durable as actually plating the metal.  I hard chromed my G20/21L slide and it's held up perfectly for almost 5 years with zero signs of wear.   It's a mat finish on the top and ends and is brushed on the flat sides.  The magwell (made by Lightning Strike) is brushed stainless steel for comparison.
I understand that someone makes a black chrome to keep the color the same as the stock one, however, it isn't as durable as hard chrome, more like black nickle.

I did a bunch a few years ago myself.  It's not hard to refinish them yourself and it's cheaper.  I used duracoat, moly resin, brownells teflon/moly, duraheat, and ceracoat.  I used a potable sandblaster I got off ebay for $20 to blast them, and then I cleaned the surface with acetone and applied the finish.  I even did Glock frames with the duracoat and it held up.  If I can dig up my CD with the pics, I'll post a few.
