Just shot and cleaned it two weeks ago.  Happened to be unloading it last night, and noticed something at the muzzle.  I have two rust spots 1/32" wide about 1/16" long almost 180 degrees apart right at the muzzle end of the "rifling".  I got it cleaned up, but now I'm wondering why.  I've NEVER had any of my Glock develop rust spots.

sounds like you may not have used a light coating of oil in the barrel. oil it and see what happens.

Seems odd. Never had a bit of rust on any Glock I've ever owned. I don't baby them either. How many rounds do you have through that barrel?

No sure it was an LE trade in that I purchased.  I've had it for almost a year now.  It can't have too many rounds through it, there is 0 external wear on the slide, and very little on the barrel/hood and slide inside.  I'd wager, just by my others no more than 1-2k.

Stay out of the ocean with your Glock.  No more underwater shooting in salt water you should be ok.

Just a wild assed guess, but are you sure it is not copper? This can look a lot like rust.

No too much salt water in Indiana.  It was NOT copper, it was a nasty rust, had to scrub it to break it loose, no doubt it was rust.

My only other guess would be that something must have broke the finish on the barrel, maybe improper cleaning tools, maybe tooling marks from the factory. It could be a LE bbl that has somekind of ballistic ID,definantly interesting.Good luck finding the cause.

Normally I would say keep your weapon cleaned and properly maintained and this won't happen.

But then again, who knows, could be that particular barrel didn't get as complete a Tennifer job as it should.  Although Glock Tennifered parts can rust, if the conditions are right.

Busted

But seriously I'm anal about the maintenance of my weapons.  I never had a Glock rust, saw a few under extreme circumstances, it just perplexes me.

I have not seen them rust either they have a great finish on them.

Never seen the barrel rust either. A friend has a older XD the slide started to

rust on that. I dont know what to tell you try to oil it up real well my Win. 94 always has

rust spots on it after hunting season just rub the shit out of it with oil to get them off.

Use Slip 2000 oil....stuff is awesome at keeping rust away and as a lube it never burns off!

Have you or the previous owner been shooting cheap steel-jacketed or "bi-metal" ammo?
6/27/2009 6:02:56 AM EDT
[#14]
Yes could it be material left behind after firing steel jacketed ammo? When you cleaned the rust out was there a pit in the barrel?

I cleaned the barrel more yesterday.  It's rust, there is mild pitting left behind.  I have shot steel ammo in my other Glocks but not this one.  I cleaned the barrel very well, when I got it home - when I purchased it.  Have always cleaned it well after range outings.

That is definitely a unique occurance in Glock World.  (It's better than the Costner film and without the cheesy webbed feet and bad Dennis Hopper acting. )

This just happened to me too. I have an older G27 that I bought new so I know that I only fired factory new ammo in it and cleaned it very carefully (only 3K through it). Just last month I noticed rust/pitting. I could not believe it. I do carry it IWB most of the time and the humidity from my body may have affected it but still, it had pits in a uniform pattern between the rifling. I probed it with a dental pick and confimred they were pits.

Long story short, I sent it back to Glock and they sent me a new barrel last week. Never did find out what caused it. I am carefully looking at my other glock barrels when I clean them.

Since I IWB, I think I need to re-oil the barel (lightly) more often.

Ya think?

I still don't get the hubbub over a spot or two of rust.  Clean it, oil 'er down and continue on with life realizing that steel is not immortal.
