So one of the service advisors at my dealership (he owns ~60-70 guns total) is trying to talk me into buying a Glock 17.
It's gonna be my first gun and it'd be for plinking/HSD. Anybody think of any reasons I should not buy this as my first pistol? Thanks in advance. ~FtB |

I personally recommend the G19.
Owning a 17, 4 19's, 26, and having owned a G27, I feel that the 19 is the best all around. You are not going to miss the 2 additional rounds that the G17 offers over the G19. If you do want the additional rounds, you can use a G17 mag in the G19. While the 17 does have more grip too it, the 19 provides more then enough for most people. Several of my friends when they started shooting Glocks preferred the G17, but after they shot them for a while, all transitioned to the G19. The 19 with cheap ball ammo makes for a fun plinking and target handgun. With good self defense ammo it makes for a great fighting weapon for home defense. The 19 is also good sized for CCW should you choose to do so in the future. While some can comfortable conceal a G17, most that carry a glock find that the 19/23 is easier to conceal yet provides plenty to hold on too, unlike the subcompacts, 26/27/33. Also, you can carry a G17 mag as your spare giving you 33 rounds on your person. |

They are one of the most reliable guns out there. They hold their value fairly well, they shoot well, they are stupid simple to maintain, and they won't rust even if you sweat all over them or drop them in salt water for years. Yeah, jump on it! +1 to all that TheNorm said. We don't know what price he's asking, but if it's right, go for it. |

The G17 is my favorite Glock... Fits my hand perfectly whereas the 19 crowds my fingers, holds 17 +1 and is as reliable as a red brick... You'll love it! This is my concern as well. I have fairly large hands and big palms so I'd be concerned with a smaller gun that my hand might be too cramped. |

No OP, there are NO reasons not to buy it. G17 is an outstanding pistol. I carry one everyday.
Stone cold reliable. Mags are relatively cheap and easy to find. Same for parts, i.e. Recoil Spring Assembly, etc. Holsters of various types are easy to find. So are sites. Simple manual of arms, easy to use/shoot. Very easy to tailor the trigger pull/feel to your liking. Very easy to clean and maintain.................very very few parts............from an engineering perspective, it. like other Glocks, seems to be a perfect bullet-launching machine. One of the best fighting pistols every made, I believe. Great for carry/HD/plinking/general purpose. Can't go wrong with it. |
Let me put it this way... 15 years ago I was looking for my first handgun to be used for target shooting and home defense and I ended up getting a G17. Fast forward to today and even though I've owned and\or shot just about every other common competitor since then, I now own 2 G17's and they are still my overall favorite and still my "go to" gun for everything but CCW.

ETA: There is no reason not to buy a G17 as a first gun, last gun, middle gun, whatever. It is bombproof. I like shooting other guns more but I like using the G17 more than my other guns. It is the one that goes places and does things. JUST MAKE SURE TO CLEAR THE DAMN THING BEFORE YOU TAKE IT APART!! And keep your finger out of the trigger guard. Simple rules that should be followed with any gun but somehow it is called "Glock leg" and "Glock hand". |

I daily carry a 17.
However, if I could only own two handguns they would be a 19 and 34. You show intelligence, maturity and dedication by settling on a single platform for martial use handguns. We always shake our head at the guy who owns multiple pistols all with completely different controls and manual of arms who then proceeds to carry a different one each day. |

as cited, the G19 is just a tad easier for CCW, but I like shooting the G17 more because of the balance, at least for me, 17 was the first Glock I bought over 20 years ago and it is still the go to handgun for many many things with me, USPSA, IDPA, my nightstand...if doomsday, nuclear war, the end of civil society, the zombies, or alien invaders arrive it is the only handgun I want on my hip...imo the most reliable semi-auto pistol ever made...
then get an Advantage Arms conversion and practice with .22LR.... |
