I have a glock 34 and it is a great gun.  Yes, it does take the g17 mags.  I got mine new for $550 about 8 months ago before the major "Obama" gun craze kicked in.  I would say get one if you can even find one these days.  It comes with a 4.5 lb trigger, I would swap the trigger bar and spring out to make it 3.5 lb pull.  All in all it is a great gun and will fit in the IPSC box for competition!  Enjoy.

I also started ('Glock'-ing) with a 19...then had to have a 17...I run Vanek triggers in both 19 and 17, and since they are expensive, I bought a 34 slide and barrel from Lone Wolf Designs to turn my 17 into a 34.  I keep the Vanek slide parts and stock Glock parts in the 34 slide, so I can just switch it out at the range.  They now make a 17L slide, too...I will probably buy one of those eventually.  You can also use the slides on top of your 19, but you have to buy a different barrel (the lock-up lug is different) and a 'dust cover' to close the gap in the bottom of the slide (all available through LWD).  I recommend at least checking it out - it's about 30% less than buying a whole Glock, so there are considerations.  If you only run stock parts, or don't mind having different triggers (or whatever other custom parts you migt put on one bu not the others) among your Glocks, maybe you prefer the whole Glock.  For custom triggers and things, though, it is cheaper to just buy the slides.  You can get all sort of different barrels, too - extended/ported/threaded.  The finish on the slides is not black (it''s flat-chrome)...they have front cocking serrations and beveled edges.  There are no sights on them.

Yeah, that's the real problem - finding one.  You could get a 17L most places, then top it with a 34 or 17 slide from LWD, if you like that idea.  Same frame on 17/34/17L...correct me if I'm wrong...pretty sure that's right, though.
