| sorry this is a newb question but what kinda barrel life can be expected out if a glock 21 barrel with a moderate firing schedule? |

Go to the following site and read about the polygonal rifling Glock uses. I've never heard of a Glock barrel being "shot out". I suppose it's possible, but it would take tens of thousands of rounds if not more. Just copy and paste to your address bar - I'm too illiterate to figure out how to make these things link automatically. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonal_rifling |

There are a few of those infamous "torture tests" out there that claim to have round counts reaching above 100k. With proper care I see no reason to doubt this. Maybe slightly worn, but hardly unserviceable. I know for a fact the G19 can still shoot great with over 15k.

The barrel will outlast the frame....You will start to see alot of the Glocks get brittle and chip and crack near the grip area and other high stress area's as they age. Link--Brittle Glocks Older Glocks getting banged around in cops holsters for 15+ years in all kinds of weather are starting to show this. Polymer don't last forever....It does seem to get more brittle with age. Trust me...... you will see much more of this as Glocks start to age. John |

Could have been a bad run. There are plastic framed HK pistols from the 70's still shooting. |
I think its more then a bad run. Polymer is breaking down and and getting brittle in Glocks that are used many years in the elements. I think you will also see this happen with PMAGS. You see alot of 40 year old 20 round aluminun AR magazines still chugging away. I don't think You will see many PMAGS working as well after all those years. I might be wrong but time will tell. Modern polymer doesn age that quickly. There is something else involved here. One or two wepons built within a certain timeframe indicate a bad batch of polymer or perhaps a mould issue. There are model 17's in service still that are a decade older than that 19. Again, there are H&K VZ 70's in service a decade older still. There are bakelite parts in use after 50 years. That stuff is primitive compared to the polymer in a Glock. I have thermolds over 20 yeas old that work great. AR stocks sets over 40 that are fine. All plastic is not equal. The polymer in glocks and PMAGS should last centuries. There are accelerated age tests involving exposure to super highl levels of UV light and O3 that is used to develop these polymers. Recycled plastic deck lumber is rates to last a minimum of 400 years. |
