Hey guys.

I was at the range today having some fun, when near the end of my session my Gen 2.5 Glock 17 malfunctions.  I try to clear per standard immediate action drill to no avail.  I apply remedial action, and still, nothing.  The slide is stuck and ain't coming free no matter what I try.  It's slightly out of battery, so I can see that there is a round still in the chamber.  I try to dismantle the gun as a last resort, but it won't come apart, leaving me to believe that the hammer is back and the round in the chamber is a live one (slide didn't look to be far enough back to have cocked the hammer, so I'm thinking it picked up an out of spec catridge, and that got stuck in the chamber).  The gun won't fire, I can't get the slide back, I can't break the weapon down, and there is a live round in the chamber.  Does anyone with more experience have any tips on how to safely clear this now locked up pistol and get it back into operation?  If it requires warranty stuff, how would I be able to resolve that with a live round in the pipe?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

ETA:  I was shooting factory loaded UMC bulk packs.

I had an issue with that once with a reload where the case was slightly deformed...

what I did was held the glock in my support hand (firmly) and the struck the back of the slide with the heel of my palm...I got it to go into battery, pulled the trigger, and everything was fine after that(I have a g17 as well).  just make sure you are at a range and pointing in a safe direction.

Place the front corner of the slide on a firm wooden object, like a reloading table or back deck.  Keep your finger away from the trigger.  Smartly smack the rear of the grip with your open palm.  I've done this several times.

That's really about all you can do.  Just be careful and don't shoot your feet.  Don't rest it on the front sight.

When out of battery slightly, I have used a flat blade screw driver between the hood and the breech face.  I gave it a little twist and it pulled the round back enough I could pull the rest back with my hand.

I had a few reloads that were hourglassing (9mm.) I now use a Lee factory crimp die and don't have a problem any more.

I had the exact same thing happen to me with my Glock 22 .40sw. I had to take it to the gun shop and get it unstuck. The .40 case was too long and out of spec. I checked the rest of the box of UMC yellow box and found 3 more cases like that.

The difference was it did not fire so the striker was down on a live round. Explaining that to the glock armorer was fun.

I have seen this happen several times at work and it was always defective brass of some kind.

All the advice given has been really good.  I used to work at an indoor range, and we had reloads go through our guns a lot, the bulged cases would stick and you would have to try one of the already mentioned techniques.

Let us know if you get it unstuck.
