the original .357mag is meant for wheelguns

the .357sig is spefically designed for autos and is in the gen same OAL as a normal .40sw/9mm, etc auto cartrige; it was simply designed to mimic the ballistics of a .357mag (penetration, velocities, etc)

the greater adv of a .357mag in a wheelgun imo, is the variety of diff loads for diff jobs--i.e: lighter 125s for PD/HD/SD, 180+grs for hunting, etc
for .357sig, its mostly 125grs or so

the 2 calibers are NOT interchangable
