Should I get a 34 or an older 17L?

What are the differences?

The 17L has a slightly longer barrel and does not have the "practical tactical" slide stop.  I own both and prefer the 34, it seems to balance better in the hand and has plenty of accuracy.  My 17L is the non FG&R frame as well.  The length of the 17L makes it look a tad funky, but theoretically it should be a slightly better shooter.  I notice no practical difference between them.  The 17L is a bit more rare and usually costs $60-$75 more than a 34.

I had a 34 until today.  I was holding it for a friend and it became my favorite Glock.

What is the practical/tactical slide release?

It's just an extended/bumped version of the standard one.

I prefer the G34 to the 17L, it seems to balance better and take the barrel to the maximum length without looking awkward.

I'm going opposite the herd on this one.

My 17L is one of my all time favorite pistols.

The longer slide gives a better - longer sight radius and better velocity too.  I also "think" it shoots a tad softer with the extra mass of the extended slide (yes there are lightening cuts on the top but it is my subjective opinion O.K.?)

I prefer the original frame, as I do not want to have my fingers "perfectly prepositioned" by Herr Glock (I'm a BIG guy with BIG paws! and the new grips scrunch my fingers in too tight).

Mine came with exteneded mag release, 3.5 trigger and extended slide release.

Extremely accurate pistol and not too much to tote (not some freakishly long "buntline special")

I can carry a 17 concealed, and the 17L is no different since the extra bbl length is easier to conceal than extra grip length / depth.

I'm truly torn between the two.

How long is the G17"L barrel?

SC-Texas, I am in Dallas and may consider selling my G17L if you ever get up this way from Houston.

I've owned and shot both the 17L and 34.  The 34 had somewhere around 100k rounds through it when I sold it and the 17L had maybe 5k rounds through it.

Having said that, I've still got my 19.

If you're really trying to make a choice between only the 17L and 34, get the 34.  Unless you just have to be unique, you'll be much, much better served by the 34.
