will the open slide design of the 35 inhibit the performance of the glock 35 in dirty environments? what's the take on this?

No.  If you pile dirt in it and fire, I doubt the performance would be hindered.

The main purpose of the hole is for balance and let me tell you, I'm much more accurate than ever!

The purpose of the hole is to reduce the slide mass and thereby use the same spring group as the standard service size family of pistols (i.e. G34/17 recoil spring assy's are interchangeable), although it does indeed help balance.

I have often wondered this myself, but have experienced no troubles with the open slides on the 34/35 pistols.  I have never intentionally dumped a cup of sand in one either though.  Considering the berettas have almost a completely open slide, I don't think it is much of an issue, however.

I carry a 35 every day. No problems.

I thought the open slide was for the compensated model that didn't sell very well.

+1

I also use mine for SWAT and it has gotten pretty dirty and no problems.

34's and 35's were never compensated. At least not from the factory.
