I am thinking of setting up a G17 as a SBR and I would like to mount a red dot sight like a small Dr Optics. Can this be done? I plan after the tax stamp to add a stock as shown in the EE and then a 17L barrel treaded for a can. I just need a good sighting option to make this project a go. I own a glock 17 now but never thought of other sight options.

Yep!

I don't know who has Jpoints or Optimas for sale right now. I believe I heard that even the Dr. Optics are hard to come by plus they are spendier.

Check with Brownells. The discounted prices aren't bad and they offer the mounts as well.
