What would be the best combat /SHTF Glock and why?

G17, G19, or G34?

Best combat/SHTF GLOCK: G21

Why: 13 + 1 .45 Auto

But going off the selections you gave.

19

9mm = adequate performance, high capacity, low weight.

19 = high capacity and accurate yet still easily concealable.

If you expect to be shooting at extended distances you should have a SHTF carbine, not a G34

Some scenarios it wouldn't be good to carry a carbine for the longer shots. Like in New Olreans anyone walking down the street with a rifle was shot. This would make you a target. A concealed handgun would have been the only option for self defense. Some longer range shooting would be needed but limited to a pistol only. Rifles/carbines would be restricted to the home for bug in or during bugout and bugout location.

I have a G26 that works very well for me so I don't know if a G19 would be much of an upgrade. Perhaps a G17 or G34 would be a better upgrade for when the SHTF and I need a little more capability over the G26.

I have thought about .45 as well. The advantage of the .45 would be the ability to stock up on cheap .45 ball ammo for when the defensive HP is gone. For 9mm your kinda screwed when the HP runs out because the cheap ball ammo is all but useless in 9mm.

However with 9mm ball you do have a better chance of turning cover into concealment over other calibers .40 and .45. So  one or two of the spare mags would be loaded with 9mm ball.

I would also like to keep it to 9mm due to mag/ammo interchangability with my current setup.

I think I just answered my question after reading over again. G17 seems like the best companion for a G26.  The G34 would be a bit slower on the draw, bulky, and doesn't offer a notable advantage over the G17 in a combat situation. Any real reason for going with a G34?
3/16/2006 9:33:59 AM EDT
[#10]
The G34 is called the practical/tactical model for a reason - it has about an inch more sight radius than the G17, has the 3 1/2 lb. connector, extended slide release and magazine release.  That is why so many competitors choose it.  The additional length does make it more difficult to conceal unless you wear an inside the pants holster.  I shoot it better at distance than the G17 but I agree with what others have said - whichever one you shoot the best is the right choice.  If you have an opportunity, shoot the models you decide to choose from before buying.

G19.  short- or long-term "SHTF" could mean cops, NG all over.  It is easier to carry a G19 concealed but ready under sheeple camoflage.  I think 9mm is the better caliber for long-term "SHTF", because you might need more ammo than you can carry.  9mm is more common.

Any of the Glock 9mm would be good.

For me, it is currently a G26.  I use it with both 10 rounders and a 10+2 mag.

Word is that a couple of Delta Force teams dropped into New Orleans. Those walking the streets with guns were shot on spot. Not a shot was heard, they were just found by the locals the next day laying in the street. Whether this is true or not a rifle carried in the open is considered a threat in a situation like this even if you have it for defense. A rifle is also considered an offensive weapon and you can be precieved as someone looking for trouble.  Be prepared for questioning, being disarmed, or worse. To those who want your gun you have also just become a target. Overall best to avoid open carry.

Cheap ball ammo is all but useless in 9mm.

Small difference between .45 HP and 9mm HP these days.
Big difference between 45 FMJ and 9mm FMJ. Bigger compromise

However with 9mm ball you do have a better chance of turning cover into concealment

9mm NATO ball will outpenetrate .45 acp

In a typical Class 1 or 2 Zombie outbreak I would stick with my G19 and my standard CCW rig.

In a Class 3 or 4 outbreak I'd prefer to have my G17 and my ubber-tactical thigh rig.

Get the 34.. It's the same size as the 1911.. It fits in "THE BOX".. I don't see how it could be slower than the 17..Better trigger, sight radius,. A 26 and a 34 is the perfect combo if you must stay with the 9...Now go get one..

G17.  As much as I prefer the .45 ACP, 9mm ammo is so much more widely abundant.  Especially in foreign lands.

For SHTF I'd have to go with the G34.  It comes with a nice trigger and its sight radius is a little longer than the G17.

I have to place my vote with the G26 + G34 combo.  If I could have only one, G26, simply because I know I can keep it on me at all times.  Anything larger can cause some concealment issues.

The best self defence gun in the world is the one you have on you when you need it.

Different levels of an outbreak. Class 1 being small, a few infected and some casualties to a Class 4 being an all out EOTWAWKI situation where the undead walk the earth. Check out the Zombie Survival Guide for more details

I don't have a search function past 30 days so I couldn't find it. You may want to search under New Orleans, or Delta Force. I think it was in the survival, or general non-team member forum section.

It really depends on what type of SHTF scenario you are planning for, and how much planning you have.  9mm is good because it will probably be available in any scenario.  If you are planning and stock up on ammo, this is a somewhat moot point, unless the SHTF long enough that you need to resupply, which means back to 9mm.  Resupply all depends on exactly where you plan on getting ammo, but I don't really want to get into that.  As far as a 1 gun fits all, I would go with a G17, or G19.  Make sure you have planty of mags in both standard and higher capacity (a G17/G18 mag will work in a G19/G26).e

If you already have a shitload of ammo, it really doesn't matter which gun you have, as long as you are effective with it.

Personally, I have made it a point to get 1 glock in each common caliber, among other pistols.  Can't go wrong with covering the bases!
